I have a vintage lil Remmy that has the fuel tank as part of the magnesium crank case. It will boil the fuel in minutes of use in hot weather from heat soaking into the fuel. Soon as you asked that question the light went on.

Agree with Tim#1 from Michigan.
Some of the big Jonsereds used the same looking piece.
In Jonsereds use it was a heat isolator and way of dropping compression as the cylinders that used it didn't have a comp release port.
