A good strong climber wants slack to move freely in the canopy. Even ascending I don't like the line in my face. The chest ascender for rope walking puts the line in my beard now. Not really a good thing so I don't do it. Mostly using a line and two or three lanyards for positioning. My gaff came out of a white oak last month half way through a big limb cut while shifting my weight but I had two lanyards on two different places so I didn't move much. Sometimes the gaff will tear out when you shift your weight. With one lanyard on you swing around a bit. Safety first. It's rare I need the line unless your resting in the saddle seat or limb walking.
Nice post mate. I have no doubt you know your stuff. You'd be dead otherwise right?
We were at a commercial climbing wall site. Kids are 9 and 12. No need to over-complicate it yet tho ay?

No need.
Probably tons of fun for them. They use auto reels here now because of liability with insurance carriers. The reel picks up the slack and if the climber falls off the wall it belays them to the ground on a centrifugal brake system. The line brake is set for the climbers weight. I never tried one myself.

Yeah the reels are on the learner side at the ones we go to. Olivia is a bit heavy for them now whereas Cody just gracefully repels down.

She’s got another 7 weeks in respite with a moonboot she’s not happy about that though

Mad is dog motivation to get better. I’d take it as a good sign. When my mom stopped getting mad and resigned herself to not being well we knew she wouldn’t be with us long.
