That's what I usually run into, Brad. I'm trying to convince folks that have rather young trees to not top them.

Topping has been such common practice here for so long, people just don't think of an alternative.

Then there's the fact that usual dudes cutting trees here, know jack squat about trees. They're just trying to make a buck.

Still see it every once and awhile around here. Fortunately most of those 2 drunks and a truck outfits have kilt themselves off. I still see topping frequently when I travel down south. Mainly notice it because I think its ugly as fork and a huge mistake for tree management.

I’m thankful that y’all are willing to help us that are learning. I know I have a long way to go but I just gotta think that I’m getting better every saw I do. You can’t learn from reading or being coached, you have to practice! However being helped and coached in the right direction sure keeps you from going backwards if you pay attention.

Biggest thing I've seen is people removing roof area from ports that are already too big in the cross section. Grinding usually makes it worse not better.

Dan usually after a tree has been topped, regardless of species, you have to keep pruning the "water sprout" branches before they get too big. Not really much you can do with them besides removal if they are really bad.

And lop off those horizontal branches but in the strongest of trees like oaks or hickory. The maples tend to break under snow loads just like the hardwood ornamentals do. Pear and apple it's common with broken laterals.

Any port really.
It will take quite a bit of filler to to fix this one 066 jug I have aquired. They removed material from the roof cross section up near the boot and put a dent in the port floor. Then they, he, it, whatever... polished all the plating at the port window so they are stock
Pretty common mistake I see. The theory is they don't want to move the stock timing but this hurts everything. Moving the port time will do more that trying to gain port area and killng velocity.
