I see lots of confused people trying to select their saw chain at home centers, so I really liked this helpful display.

Panel #1 has metal slots to ID chain gauge.

Panel #2 has raised, plastic, fingers, where they can place a chain to ID pitch.

Panel #3 tells them how to count drive links.

Then there is a binder listing chains that meet those numbers.

It does not cover every chain made, but, presumably, those sold by Lowe’s.

This was ABSOLUTELY done because of the volume or amount from homeowners that would come back as a return, claiming it didn't work on my saw. So the chain was used mostly and put on the saw not fitting correctly and ran. So the total cost from developing an idea (to EASILY teach the costumer), sourcing materials, manufacturing, delivering the product to display, teaching the floor people what it was, had to be EXTREMELY UNDER what the loss on returns were. The homeowners & the saw chain had to have been a BIG loss for the corporation to implant this. Just my worthless brain🧠 💨fart.

I see a lot of people just staring at the chain displays, with a completely lost look on their face.

And many of the employees (if you can find one) do not know much more.

This probably captures sales that would otherwise be lost.

Stores accepting the return of used / abused merchandise is a seperate issue: I know that it happens a lot.

I like the people that would come in and say they needed a chain for their chainsaw, when asked what chainsaw they had, they would respond with "a Stihl" or "a Husqvarna" and then follow it up with "what chain do I need"....

There are even morons working at the main dealer stores who mess up picking chains people need. I always told people when they didn't have all the info they needed to bring in their entire saw in and I would make sure they got the right chain and would even put it on their saw for them. Many times they were so happy to get the right chain, they would buy another so they would have to guess next time they needed a chain. I only had one time where a standard chain didn't fit because the chainsaw had an Oregon or Carlton bar and I had to custom make a chain off our roll. Ended up saving the guy about $10 doing it that way and got him the exact size he needed.
