For some reason it's cheaper to buy a 550xp than a 501 Echo over here. Echo are very expensive here IMO.

Most of the ECHO's stateside are made in the states. All of the ones here are made in Japan. However, Japan has signed a few trade agreements with the EU the last few years that are coming to fruition(you'll notice Japan pops up on general EBay searches now). Eventually we'll see more Echo/Shindaiwa products and the prices will hopefully come down.
Having said it, I would prefer a Dolmar or Makita 43cc to an Echo 390 or 490. I sold a few Echo's not long ago, and got a pair of 390's and a 361 in the deal at wholesale. The 390's are good, tiny saws, with a hell of a grunt. But if you are practicing forestry, they are terrible for snedding/limbing. The Echo's just aren't as willing to rev with factory porting, and the way the intake is ported, you have to do a lot of song and dance to get around it to get good results.
