anyone have a recomendation for a hand held mechanical taxhometer? I need to measure RPM's on a shaft for a circular sawmill.

I would like something quality, not a cheapo, thanks in advance.

We have an old one from Briggs and Stratton that works well. Could you use a diesel tach that uses a reflective sticker to read rpm’s? I think that would be more satisfactory.

FOR a circle sawmill and need to read the mandrel speed/RPM?
I Prefer the STEWART WARNER handheld , it is mechanical. I have used them for a long time. Loaned one once to a friend (a know it all DANDEE)
I told him to be sure to have it held in a safe firm way or he could get hurt or mess up a not so cheap toy..
I have it with his name on a post it next to my tool rule magnetic sign. He doesn't come around so often. Not all Bad.

The rubber tips get hard as they age and there are a few shapes/attachments. If your mandrel has a centering point in it (most of them do) I use the pointed rubber tip.

I used tp have one years upon years ago, but it has been lost somewhere into the abyss, its not something i need right away, but I need to get accurate measurments of the arbor speed for a circular sawmill me and my cousin are building, i staryed a thread a few months ago when we fished some parts out for it, Im going to update that thread later this week when the detroit 471 shows up.

I saw one on the bay for $20.00 No tips and not new looking Good place to start.
What size mandrel / gauge and tooth pattern is YOUR blade? Belt drive I assume. a 471 will cut some lumber>
I had a guy in Creston Iowa wanting me to hammer his blade. He had a 371 Detroit Belted to a 2-7/16" mandrel 60" 8/9GA F pattern blade turning 550 RPM He was trying to paper washer the loose collar (4" collars don't do well on A 60" blade) because the blade was changing dish when he snugged collars to the blade. I drove 100 miles to give him advice that could have started on the first phone call.
Maybe asking to much too soon. I assume you have it figgered out . I haven't messed with sawmills for a while and it does get lodged in my head in spells. Good luck and enjoy your project.

I have used a Briggs and Stratton vibri tach many times and they seem to work well. Cheap and supposedly works on anything that rotates.

Going to need double hearing protection cutting lumber. Those Detroits aren’t quiet.

WHADJA SAY... But THEY do sound PURDY when the Gov'ner HUNKERS IN.
I'll be Sporting a 6V71 when my dream happens.
Cousin had an old cable skidder with a Detroit and my uncle had 2 allis dozers with them an hd-10 cable and an hd-11 with a garwood hydraulic blade. Both the dozers were Detroit power also can’t remember if 458 or 471 though. Think the skidder was a 358 but not sure

For that matter you probably can calculate the shaft rpm just from your planned rpm on engine and pulley ratios for the belt driving it or chains.

if i knew the gear ratios of the gearbox than calculations wouldnt be to hard. Im thinkin something like this would be nice to own, the sirometer could work good as longs as there is a carrier bearing or pillow bearing I can put it on. i know the engine needs to turn about 1,800 RPM's but where that puts the shaft speed in any given gear is unknown to me. the Mac truck will be in town tomorrow, if I get a chance Ill stop in and see what he has onboard.
