Being iced in I figured I would finish this MS440 finally. Split it down and found this under the clutch drum bearing area. Thoughts?

Seems to me, the rough texture may give the bearings premature wear.

I would have greased the heck out of it and run it. When you are cutting, that bearing is not in use, only during idle so very low pressure on it.

Worst case scenario, you replace the bearing every now & then.

But it is nice to have good people on this site with better solutions.

Another option for that crank is some silver solder and then polishing back to the right diameter. But realistically...it would be just fine to run, just requiring some extra TLC and grease more frequently.

I would too.. I understand that as soon as the clutch locks up this bearing stops. I replaced it for the same reason it's an all OEM build.. tree service saw. When I started doing work for this company I took two hours one day to watch how they operate. It didn't take long to realize why they have LOTS of PTO side failures. Common practice to fuel and oil saws, crank them, and let them idle to warm up for 10-15 minutes! I quickly pointed out that isn't necessary and is actually hard on them.. customer is always right though. They bring me broken saws, I fix them and take their money.

Haven't even fueled it. Maybe tonight. Lots of rain this weekend and videos are not my strong point but I'll see what I can do.

Yes.. you could do that. I could also get it spray welded and turned in a lathe... along with a million different ideas. Dallas graciously offered a crank so I put in a good one and never look back.

FWIW Joe is getting the other one for research purposes so it will not go to waste.

Good job on the 440 Jimmy. I have 3 Arctis together with another set of cases in the cleanup stages, these saws were really dirty coming from softwood pulp cutters but they clean up nice. Will get 5 good running saws from the 15 carcasses with lots of spare parts left to keep them running for a while.
