G'day everyone, stripping down a 192t with the fat recoil cover, there is bubbling noise from rings when turned over by hand so took out the clamshell to change the rings and found what looked like a big gouge above the exhaust port. Hmm, bit annoyed as looks like I need a new cylinder, then I discover on the internet it is a design feature to lower compression and aid starting...

So, my question, is this cylinder any good for making a lightly modded work saw or would a non easy2start cylinder be a better idea? Will this designer gouge affect power?

Are AM parts for the 192 any good compared to OEM?

Cheers all

Andy

With a good oil film on the cylinder walls, any saw will make a "bubbling" or "hissing" sound when pulled over slowly. That's compression escaping between the rings and wall of the piston. (Obviously you recognized that hence the tear down). It's when you DONT hear that is where the problems begin.

As far as the gouge you refer to, I've never wrenched on a 192......

Totally agree with the above statement....when I have cranked over saws slowly by hand I've heard several that do that. Compression was still fine, just the leakage at that slow of a revolution. Some worse than others, but still ran like champs.

pics of the gouge please. easy starts are usually just a different recoil. never seen something inside for decomping like that.

one thing i have come across is muffler screws being done up too tight or the holes not drilled deep enough, push into the chamber. dont ask me how i know  but i normally throw 2 or 3 washers in with the muffler screws.. just ot be sure.

I get a pic after work, it looks too uniform to be damage and piston is untouched, read aomewhere that they did it for lower compression, bought another oem engine from ebay but he dropped it whilst packaging and broke it [emoji22]
