Moron Alert: I ran my new CS-590 briefly with brake locked

This is my first gas chainsaw, and in my excitement to get up and running, I ran the chainsaw for a few seconds with the chain brake locked.

And yes I was attempting WOT to get a baseline RPM reading for carb adjustment, when I realized that was a bad thing to do.

Is it likely I did any damage to the clutch or something else?

What is the best way to check if everything is working OK or not?

Welcome to the forum!
You can take the C clip out and take the drum of to see. When you put it back, you need to line up the drum slot for the oil pump drive gear, use a flash light to see better.
Generally speaking, few seconds wont hurt anything.

Does it still cut chips? Or is it mince meat..and chain stalls while cutting ?

Did that with a client’s saw. Several minutes. Toasted the clutch springs and severely melted plastic. [emoji90]

Thanks for all the replies. I decided to buck some large oak and she seemed to cut pretty well and did not die while cutting

It did stall a couple times when returning to idle after doing a long partial cut and then pulling the blade…I mean bar…out.

But I am at 4500 feet elevation, and have the service and carb adjust manuals, so seems like that is the next order of business.

Currently she runs at 2500 idle and about 11,200 at WOT. Book says 2600-3200 and 11,800-12,800 so seems I have some adjusting to do...

What a difference from my DeWalt 16" Electric saw, lol

If it dies coming out of a cut returning to idle, open the low 1/8-1/4 turn. It’s leaning out.

Could it be the high is set too rich and overloading it with fuel when the throttle shuts?

That’s what I’m thinking. I’m going to follow the carb adjustment in the service manual as a start, and go from there. Pretty sure it’s running a little rich currently.

Got the carb adjusted and runs much better now.
