395 is probably the best milling saw under 100cc’s other than maybe an older flattop 066 with a modified oiler and maxflo filter. Good filter, adjustable carb, good oiler, good power, outboard clutch, good durability and the same 6203 bearing and separate seal on both sides. Milling is probably the hardest task to ask of a chainsaw and the 395 is setup pretty good as is in stock form for it compared to most new saws. I would recommend a muffler mod in the least though to help it run cooler. Heat is the enemy. They aren’t a obnoxious saw if the outlets are kept reasonable and hearing protection is worn.
Thanks for the comment, I supposed I did good then. The saw was just sitting on the counter next to me when I was paying for my log splitter and tractor, so I went for it.

Stihl came down pretty hard on the dealer that sold it. Even though it was sold to me by someone who resold it, they came to the dealer wanting to know why this saw from Europe was in Tennessee.
I’ve had both my 462 and 500i plugged up to my MDG and never heard of any repercussion. Both of them came from outside the country. Not sure I understand why that’s important to Stihl. Surely by now they know that their products are shipped all around the world after being sold/resale.
Their big thing (as has been explained to me) is educating the consumer at the point of sale. At one of the two dealers I frequent you cannot buy a saw NIB. They won’t sell it to you. It’s got to be gassed and oiled and run before delivery , period. The other will sell you all you can carry NIB. I don’t get it really.
Not really sure they are being straight with me.

There's probably some code in the MDG module that takes count of the operating parameters, ie if there's anything that is out of the ordinary ze germans get wind of it quickly, borderline ridiculous if you ask me.

I'm really tempted to purchase one NIB and send it over to MMWS have It ported then take it back to my dealer and have it connected to the inter webs just to get a laugh.

I had not considered that readings taken from a saw in this country could/would be analyzed by the folks in Germany. And I wonder if a ported 500i would throw data that would raise eyebrows if it were being viewed as a stock saw? Could be, just sayin’. Like maybe a 201Tcm that revs to 16k? Attempted starts, starts, mins at idle, mins at high speed, HIGHEST RPM and other parameters are recorded (and it sounds like reported) so there ya go!

Saw Nazis?

I’ve felt that way about stihl for some time now.
From their strangle hold on auto tune tech (that Husqvarna sold to them) to their reluctance to sell parts online/go after people that do. And last but not least force you to take stihl equipment to the dealers that are inadequately informed on the products.

Most of your complaints apply to most industries now.

All this is pretty interesting. I'm fascinated by the new technology.
I'm also wondering what these dudes are learning from their diagnostic of a ported saw -- replugged and reviewed?!

Good morning crew,

Would someone please provide a link to a thread or article were I can read and understand
what you are referring to as far as: MDG, plugged etc. ?

Do these new saws have some kind of tracking device imbedded in them?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Chet

MDG is Stihl's interface from the saw to a computer program that can read the serial number, fault codes, run time, etc.

Once a saw is hooked up, the information provided by the saw can be viewed by Stihl headquarters.

So....a 500i that is only available in Europe being plugged into an IP address for Tennessee raises some questions.

Is "MDG" available to common saw-surfs? Or would you have need to be friends with a friend who knows people and stuffs?
Asking for a friend. :eusa_whistle:

I was told that anybody can buy an MDG kit, but STIHL does not have to support them with updates and such.

At least not yet.

Maybe disconnect the inter web before plug it in for a reset? I don't know if that software can be run offline.

If you get a vpn , then you can hook it up and pretend your in any country you want to be,

but I think there's more to it than we know or see. Probably the MDG sends its own info (serial) as well, have you or anyone else intercepted the data it sends off to HQ.

It would be interesting to know everything it sends.

Anybody can own one and use it. I bought one from my dealer and they warranted a defective Bluetooth connector for me. The district rep called me to get my address for the warranty info. Nothing was ever said about “You shouldn’t have one of these”. I tried to buy one at another dealer first and their mechanic stopped the sale. He told his boss I wasn’t allowed and rather than take a chance he declined the sale.
When you hook up to the internet your software is updated automatically. You cannot use it without hooking up to the internet.
