Minty 048 found, but I need a NOS piston, if anyone is hoarding one...

I just picked up this really tidy 048 cheap, but she's been straight gased :(. This series of saw is special to me as an 042 was the first saw I remember my Dad having, he picked his up as an early dealer demonstrator saw, when Stihl was introducing them and he was selling them. Now I would love to find a NOS 52mm 2 ring domed piston, part number 1117 030 2001, if anyone has one stashed away. I didn't know whether it was best to post here or in the WTB thread but I thought I might get more traffic here.

If you can't find the 048 version, then a regular 056AV piston may work. They're a 52mm piston that uses a 13mm wrist pin like the 048. I can't remember if the 056 slug is domed, but I think it is.

Thanks Jacob, Lil Red Barn do have an aftermarket version: http://www.lilredbarn.net/product-p/pksh048-52mm.htm but I'd like to find NOS OEM if I could. Have you used a LRB piston before? What's the quality like?

I think I would steer clear of LRB pistons unless there's absolutely no other choice. I've not used them but what I've heard so far is not good.

Again, I'm not saying the 056 piston is a slam-dunk - there may be a significant different in crown height or skirt length. I would check out ebay.de for
possible NOS 048 options. A lot of old Stihl parts seem to pop up in Germany.

Late to the party .The 038 Mag is also 52 MM without looking I'd assume a 13 mm pin also . The mag unlike the 038 av has a flat top piston not hemi domed .Mean time break it down and take a peak it might be able to live with a little sand paper and elbow grease .
If you try the sandpaper a low spot unless it's huge might work but a high spot breaks the surface tension of the oil in the mix and will again fail .--don't be stingy with the oil in the mix now .

Thanks Al, the 38 mag piston has a 12mm wrist pin unfortunately, so I've got that NOS piston from Ebay that @Woodslasher posted the link to above coming.

I've wondered about that .I try to find alternatives for the 042-048 series because I have several myself .I did find the illusive generic size for the clutch side seal .On the piston which again I'm not certain of the replacement the 042/-48 lists the needle cage as 13-17-14.5 and the 038 as 12-16-13 .I'd think a cage of 12-17-14 or so might work if the piston would work .That I don't know .I also have no idea if a needle cage is made in that size . Some of these things you have to think outside the box .BTW though the flywheel side seal is the same as an 038 and if I'm not mistaken the rings are the same as an 038 Mag .I have notes on these rather rare saws some place but exactly where at the moment I have no idea . :)

I'd be keen to know what that generic seal is for the clutch side Al?

I might further add to the conversation the 048 was the first Stihl I ever owned and it came from a Stihl dealer from Oregon with a spun clutch side bearing .I was flying blind but using mechanical practices decades old I got it ..I'll just say it was a learning curve .

Say I surfed flea bay and they do list 12x17x14 needle cages ,about 12 bucks total shipped from Germany .Could be an option or not .

And yesterday I finally got to strip the saw down, and clean her up. The cylinder came up beautifully and the saw went together really well. I don't believe it's done much work! Starts and runs like new and I can't wait to put it in some wood to try it out.
