Loose cylinders

Lately I have had a lot of saws come across my bench with loose cylinder bolts. Mostly Poulan xxv/micro top handle. And alot of half shaft blowers and weedeaters. Is this a common issue for everyone? Usualy a easy fix but really drives me nuts when the tool runs can't be tuned. On one I replaced the crank seal that was full of grass saw started and ran but couldn't tune in.

i bought a 361 on ebay once that the cylinder had one cylinder bolt tight and it broke the base off the cylinder on the corner but still ran but cylinder was trash

I recently purchased a used (abused) saw and the cylinder bolts were on so tight that I thought that I would strip the bolts while removing them!! At least I didn't get a hernia ... I don't think ... I do have abdominal muscle pain on the right side ...

Oh yeah, the guy said "I pulled the jug". And one of the 4 bolts was a stainless steel flat head bolt in contrast to the other 3 hex head blued bolts. ...

Ok, on a more serious note, the same used (abused) saw that I bought, keeps loosening the muffler bolts. I tighten them and after not even a full tank they come loose. If I apply more torque while tightening I will likely crack the cylinder head.

Try Loctite?

Self-locking Helicoils. They go in with normal tools but have a "square" thread in the middle of the coil that holds onto the screw, like a deformed lock nut in reverse.

I have a John Deere/Homelite trimmer head that started running horribly one day. It took a little while to notice the muffler was loose, it dropped one of the bolts! So I checked the rest of it and found the 4 screws that hold the rear cover plate on the crankcase (it's a half-crank engine) were loose. Nothing leaked however. Once everything was tightened back down the engine ran fine. I guess vibration can eventually work anything loose.

When I think about the ones I have fixed they all have been 2 bolt setup. Guess 2 bolts just don't hold the cylinder on very well.

Try Loctite?

I tried blue loctite with no success. The heat just melts it. Any suggestion for a non-permanent thread locker that can withstand the heat?

I safety wired the muffler bolts on one long time ago. Prolly should have Helicoiled it.

Very easy way to secure muffler bolts. Tie strap, lock plate ot whatever you would call it. Mac used them on 10 sries saws and they work well.

Easy make out of a piece of tin can or whatever.

Just bend a corner or edge up against one of the bolt head flats.
