I have a John Deere S1400 string trimmer. Does anyone know what type of grease is used on the drive cable, and if the gear head itself can be lubricated. Thanks.

Echo Red Armor lubricant/grease or Stihl Superlub should work for the cable and the gear case. There should be a screw on the side of the gear case you can remove and add some grease.

I looked at a parts diagram and it doesn't look like there is a grease port shown. If there isn't, the input shaft of the gearcase may be hollow and you could shoot some grease through the shaft.
