What Jim has is not your average 500i. I know the struggles it takes to get what he has pictured.

I owe it to the patience of my good friend in Germany @old_sir_henry. It was simple enough to send over the money to purchase the saw, (actually it wasn’t, but that’s another thing we had to get worked out) but apparently if you’re not a commercial shipper you have to be certified/approved as one before you can legally ship something that exceeds €1000. He jumped thru hoop after hoop, filed out several applications over many days and was determined to get it right but in the end it was all for naught. His request to ship the saw was denied because of an error that occurred at the very beginning. We shipped it and valued it at less than the €1000 threshold. It survived an additional “dangerous goods” inspection at the border and I mean “survived”! On the outside every corner and seam was covered with yellow border inspection labeled tape. Inside was the same, they could have just pulled the lid open on the factory carton but they cut the tape on the bottom of it to get in.
Quite a saga for what should have been a simple deal. Thanks again Horst!

Jim, you're welcome! You have helped many times in the past and it always was a pleasure to deal with you.
This time, due to the fact the saw exceeds a 1000 € limit, it was very complicated but ,mostly due my reluctance to simply state a value lower than the limit. I hesitated because insurance also wouldn't cover the entire value of the shipped goods until Jim suggested to take that risk.

The dangerous goods hassle is a story of its own. I left both tanks plugs open and hoped, the guys at the Xray-terminal would be able to notice that there cannot be any explosive liquides due to the open tanks but it didn't prevent them from opening the packet.
At least I received a letter telling me DHL has opened my shipment but didn't find any dangerous items in there and that the shipment continued its journey.

I'd like to see pictures of all those tape patches DHL has applied

I left the outer box at work but the factory carton is in the attic. For now , I can’t get to it but when the wife moves her car I’ll climb up there a take a pic. After they cut the tape along the whole bottom seam, they just put a short piece of tape across the middle of the seam. The saw almost fell out of the bottom of the box when I picked it out of the outer box and turned it upright.

When you get saws from the USA does it appear that customs has opened and inspected the box? I sent saws and tools worldwide and I often wonder. I am really wanting to send some 2 man saws to your country but they are a bit of a bugger to send.

It wasn't customs who opened the box but the transport service company. I don't know why they did, maybe because of my declaration of the contents of the box ('chainsaw power head') maybe due to what they saw when x-raying the box (a petrol-powered engine). The letter they sent me explained to opening due to international and especially airborne-transport related security regulations.
AFAIK in international shipments no customs are involved at the departing side but only in the receiving country. The inspection in this case took place in Germany before the item was moved into an aircraft.

When I received my Poulan 6000 sent to me by Jim it had been opened in the destination country (here in Germany that is) but I don't remember by whom, DHL or customs. Reason was probably they weren't able to determine the value of the shipment and therefor the amount of customs' fee to extort from me. In the end the box was shipped to our local customs' office (about half an hour by car from my place) where I had to negotiated the ransom amount I had to pay to get my goods handed out.

I sent saws via DHL and had a similar thing happen ...
They opened the box and said there was a gas small coming from saws ..I had two saws in one box ..being both used saws they had a smell because I simply just dumped out all the gas and oil and I'm sure there was still a small smell from simply being used .
So they returned them to me stating I had to purge the tanks completely of all liquids and they had to be completely dry .
So I rinsed out the tanks with alcohol and wiped them all down and away they went.
It was a fiasco dealing with DHL !
