Well there it is reduced to it's basic components. Going to replace the near 20 year old crank seals just because it's good insurance. Bearings feel like new. Now....clean clean clean clean clean clean.....IMG_20171210_133426228.jpg

Pulled this out today to show the effect of using Pledge for reviving an oxidized 50 top cover. Read about it some time ago and gave it a try on this saw. Was amazed at how well it worked compared to ArmorAll. Think I rebuilt it last winter and it hasn't dulled at all since. And it was nasty..., that flat, dull gray finish like these can get with age. Pretty remarkable.

This is a 51 I did a muffler mod on and it runs great once its warmed up. When its cold its runs at half throttle until I cut a round or 2. Any suggestions on what it could be?

I have reset the carb.

Well I got that 55 Closed Port back together with the Performance Saw Supply windowed 45mm piston from Lil Red Barn tonight. I'm sorry but I was kind of hurrying to get it together for my friend and didn't take pics along the way. We have been SUPER busy plowing snow at work, working a ton of OT last week and this week and I wanted to get this thing together.

It pressure tested good and pulled just shy of 160psi with the base gasket before first startup with the cylinder pre-lubed with mix oil for assembly and first startup. Idles stable and throttle response is good with no stumbling. I have it set a little on the rich side for break-in and will heat cycle it a couple more times before returning it. All in all it was a success.

I have to say, I'm really not fond of the intake and impulse designs, they really are the glaring weakness of this saw IMHO....Other than that, not a bad saw at all.

This started life as a 50 then it was trashed and put on ebay being sold as parts, where i got it and made it into my project. Nows it a mixture of 50, 51 and 55 parts most importantly a 46mm cylinder kit, no base gasket and gutted muffler that breathes better. Starts in 3 pulls and idles consistently from there. my first step to problem solving would be to cover the hole and see if that fixes the issue. Its a large hole for what i would consider a small/med size saw. Mine bogs down a little for the first 10 seconds of starting but normal after.

What is the difference between any 55 and a 254xp or any other pro saw. Ive recently learned a handle/tank will also fit a 262xp so what else fits xp saws? Compared to some things sold today I'd consider an old tried and true 55 to be pro level. Not to sound biased but I'm very pleased with mine.

The 50/51/55 chassis was a mid range saw when new. They had a pro style case and removable cylinder arrangement but the intake and air filter were not as heavy duty as the "Pro" version. The 55 Family muffler interchanges with the 154/254 and the tank is the same as the 154/254/257 which can be used on the 262 with 257 mounts. The front handle is also the same as the 154/254.

Am i wrong? But back in the day it was almost xp/pro grade ? Todays quality its better than some "pro" saws. I just dont understand the class it falls into. Now a new "rancher" from a big store i get how the quality has fallen off. But a 30yr old saw that stil smokes a 261 is cool. Why is there no love for the 55

You are on track, the new Ranchers are no where near the build quality of the old 55. The closest available equivalent IMO would be the 555.

I havent put my mitts on a 555. I like both orange and orange and white saws. Anything of quality. Sorry if i sounded defensive. I just have a soft spot for the underdogs.
