Morning folks, need a little help on a 435 xt iam working on, i picked this up from TSC, was down there buying a new fiskars axe and it was sitting on the shelf dirty, curious why a used saw was on the shelf, i asked the employee, he said it was returned because the customer said it wouldn't run, i never seen a store return a used saw, so after chatting about it, I noticed the tank was full of fuel, i opened it up and sure enough no oil in the fuel, so I talked to the manager & she offered it to me for $50.00, I couldn't pass it up so it came home with me, I pulled the muffler and the piston is scored, this is the first husky I've worked on, everything came apart easy.

The problem iam having is getting the tank/handle assembly off, the 2 fuel lines that run from the tank to the carb & primer bulb, how do these come out? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is awesome to hear. It is the store's prerogative to take back a saw and swap it out for a new one and then sell the used one at a discount. Depending on the store, sometimes it is better to have a happy customer and take a loss. Very surprised though that they put a saw out on the shelf with fuel in it....customers like to pick up the saws and pull the cords, what a surprise if it had fired up.

The scoring on the piston does not look that bad, at least from this angle. I got a MS 261 this way and I was able to clean up the cylinder and replace the piston and it was off and running!

It appears that the two fuel lines you describe are just push-inserted and should just pull out with a little work...see the pic from the IPL:

As for separating the fuel tank from the body, it appears to be two screws and two other spots that fit into the fuel tank area. The two red circles should be two screws and the two yellow circles probably just fit inside the body. Once you have the screws removed then it may take twisting the fuel tank around enough for it to come out. Sometimes it can be a bit of a dance.

Does the piston ring move freely? I would take a Scotchbrite pad and go horizontal to the scratching just to try and knock down any high spots on both the cylinder and piston. Put it back in and see if you have compression, if so, change out the fuel and give it a shot.

I am working on a piston that melted aluminum over the rings, so far its cleaning up pretty good. As soon as I get the transfer in the cylinder cleaned up I will give it a try and see if it will move smoothly and run. Your piston and cylinder are in better condition than the one I am working with.

Yup ring moves freely, no marks on it, i can feel a little edge on the piston with my finger nail, nothing catching on the cylinder, I'll give the scotchbrite a shot, guess worst case scenario I get a full kit or partial from duke's. Thanks for the help @hacskaroly

Looks like it's only have black scotchbrite, what do you guys recommend?
Get green or blue from the grocery store...easy and cheap. I have not used black, so not sure what grit it is. I have also used Dollar Store scotchbrite, but it sheds green bits everywhere.

The black is fine grit, i use it on gunparts that need polishing, I'll check & see if the wife has some green, if not i gotta go get the kids from school shortly, I'll stop and grab some. Thanks again @hacskaroly really appreciate the help. Here's a few pics of the saw before teardown. The fuel is the same color orange after draining.

Cool, good to know. Yeah, the green or blue will be more coarse, but should go through aluminum transfer on the cylinder pretty good. Yeah, some people should not own chainsaws. Where I worked, the first tank of fuel was pre-mix can gas that we put in the saw, so if it came back with straight gas, there was no doubt that the customer put it in there. Fun times, had one customer pour straight gas in the chainsaw and followed with pouring in some mix oil, thought it would be good to go, but nope, not even a shake of the chainsaw before starting and straight gassed the thing.

Great find. I would clean up both cyl and piston, then, new rings. No need to replace anything but rings. Nice new saw for well under $100, score!
Gonna need a new ring for sure, it had a slight score mark inline with the piston, when i went to clean up the piston, i grabbed the ring with my fingernail and just barely pulled it & it shaped in half, must have got brittle from the heat i assume, so new piston ring on the way.

Rings are brittle, brand new.
I've snapped a couple new ones just getting them on a piston :p

Finally got the day off today to work on the saw, installed a new oem ring & couldn't get the saw to run or idle, it was acting like it wasn't getting enough fuel, i double checked everything & installing a fresh plug, no go, i went on a search for the carb settings and found an old post fom @ray benson (Thank you) that he posted in 2016 at the other place, 2 turns H 2.5 L, the saw fired right up and runs great, just needs a little fine tuning, i don't know how it was able to run prior at the setting it had, 1/2L 1H

Yup, the newer Huskies and a few others are in that 2, 2 1/2 category rather than 1&1
