husky 298

I can get a 298 husky from my old boss basically for free. It's been sitting for years. I fooled with it a couple of years back but the starter pawls were stripped which I hear is a common problem with this saw.
Is it worth getting into? Are parts available? How do they stack up to other 6 cube saws?

Will do. From what I understand it was the predecessor to the 2100? Is this correct?

2100 then 298 for 2 years then 2101.

That is probably true too. There was a couple things but the starter was the big one I remember.

the 298 didn't have the manual oiler. I was unaware
of the starters. I'll have to check them out too. I know
my 2100 pulls over like it has 300lbs comp.

The 298 was an attempt at a lighter weight model. They ditched the manual oiler and went to a narrow flywheel with only 2 starter paws and thus had to make the starter cover more narrow, it may have been plastic. The starter assembly was problematic but you can switch it over to 2100/2101 style if you get the flywheel, starter cover and air dam.

The last time I tried to start the saw was about 5 years ago. It was so hard to pull over I was sure something was wrong. No decomp if I am remembering correctly. I've drop started a 3120 that was easier to pull over than this thing.
