Hi Folks
I have just torn down a nice old Husky 181 and found it has a thin ring piston.
Cylinder bore and the piston are in fantastic condition but when I put the tings in the cylinder, there is a LOT of ring end gap.

I am wondering if anyone can tell me if this is normal or are the rings worn out?

There is a set of new rings on ebay but they will be about $140 AUD delivered to me in Australia.

Thanks mate
I will look into it

I recon it will go good with a bit of grinding work.

Any thoughts on advantages of the 181 piston with 100% transfer feed via the piston windows V's a single ring meteor that is more like a 394 piston?

I am wondering which one will feed the lowers better

The 281 single ring is a direct fit if you want a new piston. Have put the piston at BDC and study.

The other benefit is lower cranking compression / pressure. But when the gas is behind it. It will increase compression

Thin rings are different mr brewz

The rings don't have a radius to match the ring pin. They come in flat. I think you may get away with more end gap. You can also swap the bottom and top ring

Also I have heard less ring flutter at high rpm. But I don't have real proof just reading that thin rings are better

I am thinking I will go this way and just order a new Meteor.
I might be able to find a set of rings for ya but personally I would use homelite rings. I got a set of 266 thin rings a couple mos ago for around $20.

But if you decide to use a 281 thick ring slug I got a nos oem slug kit that I'm not planning on using. I'd trade for the thin piston and some boot.....
