Not that what I do matters but first place I look for stuff is site supporters, I think well done adds, with interesting stuff would be appreciated by just about everybody. Don’t forget tools or axes, might wanna check out boltdepot.com too.

Some sites have a supporter membership. Where individuals can subscribe a small donation each month. I would be more than happy to be a subscriber. I feel no service should be completely free. Especially a GREAT one!
not a bad idea. But maybe keep free membership available and have the paid membership come with privledges like being able to post pics or something. I don’t know, just spit ballin.

$1.99 a month/2,000 paying members adds up quick.

Don’t get in bed with Baileys unless they are willing to do significant discounts on shipping for OPE members. I’m not ever going to pay $17 shipping for a $3 order again.
Bailey's ran me off permanently with the security issue they knew that had and kept quite about. It cost me some trouble, though nothing major, still they HAD a duty to come forth about it. It's too bad because I never had any shipping or price issues with them and like their products.

@Definitive Dave has a "blinking" ad..........

No, Dave has the rolly polly cookie that I am sure in his mind he thinks he cut when he sees it.

What is a little weird to me is that all this is supposed to be @exCanuck 's specialty... At least he is doing a bang up job getting HL Supply ads to pop up everywhere I surf...

What do you want from a guy still using Windows 8 ffs.

I wouldn't expect places in direct competition to be sponsors. But, stranger things have happened now days.

The subscribing members could enjoy click-bait ad free viewing. Wouldn't want to loose all the ads the legit companys pay hard earned mony for. If you take away picture posting you would loose many members. Not everyone can spare a few dollars a month. Not every member wants to spare a few dollars a month.

great thread it is a good question , which is the best way too go
Sponsored forums work ok on some sites if the one running
There own forum is on the ball
As this site has grown banners and adds are probably the best way forward
I sponsor this forum monthly as I trade with a lot of people and I feel
It’s only fair too give something back for a great forum run by the best

I also sponsor arbtalk uk and have my own sponsored forum which is
Worth it totally cos I got a lot of customers on there , I can check in
And get the stuff they need , and I can post up videos of loud fast chainsaws
Perfect win win
but the rest of the site is full of religion and politics and *b-wordin and moning
Not for me

I also help Buckin billy Ray on youtube monthly and this type of help is beneficial for me as I can push out the Dolmar love and help people overcome
There fear of the dark side

This is a great site , with great people , good guvnor’s that’ll let a derail run
And at the end of the day you gotta turn some money back in and make a profit

But I don’t know if BIG BRANDS are the best bet , checkout what there calendars are like 1st , don’t want no big WTF’s and eye bleach is expensive

Not a good idea. No new member will join with a problem they are looking for answers too. They want to post a pic to get help. Maybe yall or we can help without pics but you will drive away possible new people that want to join if they cannot share pics of a problem or just something they want to post a pic of. Remember everyone does not come in here as an established member or someone we recognize from another forum.

Are saw makers sponsors? I don't see adds cause I rarely use the forum not on Tapatalk. But as many Stihls as the monkey gets his hands on it would seem like it would make sense. Plus all the brands of OPE have a captive audience here. They can push their sales and maybe special pricing for forum members...well I don't guess places like stihl, echo, dolmar, and husky sell direct. But new product adds for the new saw or blower or whatever they have surely won't hurt.

Good point, this is why brainstorming works.

Just an off the cuff thought. And I agree, that particular example would hurt new memberships

I'm brainstorming ideas and I think a poll that kind of narrows down choices would help members express what ads they are interested in seeing.

Ads should be seasonal also and cater to our niche. A sale on archery equipment will catch people's interest at the end of summer/ beginning of fall, but probably not when there's 2 feet of snow in winter.

People that are interested in OPE and chainsaws are also likely interested in outdoor apparel, wood heating systems, climbing gear, gardening, hunting, fishing, renting pigs, etc., etc., etc.

Any of those ads would likely produce traffic to the sites that pay for their advertising. You can throw Google Ads anywhere and it won't generate traffic, because people are desensitized to the ads.

I think the main point here is to have effective adverts that cater to the chainsaw and OPE crowd. Otherwise, they'll become like Google Ads, and be ignored.

It does take a pretty proactive person at the wheel to make it work. Xenforo is easy to use and ads can easily be placed on the sidebar and top banners.

There is always social media to consider. I don't know how everyone feels about it, but that's why I like the poll idea, as it lets people express whether they want social media or not.

Social media can be used to promote OPE when content is shared. This should help to create a larger web presence for OPE which will help get new members.

Again, brainstorming. I'm all for ads that are useful to us as members. I use the clickable links regularly.

The site ain't about to go belly up. LOL

This is just the next step in growing and maybe turning a little profit.

The clickbait ads were exactly opposite of what we need. We need to attract members and advertisers.....not drive good members away with that crap.
I have a friend who works for a company that builds and supplies parts for off road vehicles like jeep and Dodge I can see if he would be interested in talking to the hire up people never know it could be good for them to get there name out further.

Not sure if some potential sponsors might view the main site sponsor as a potential competitor: that would need to be clarified when soliciting ads.

As a participant, what I really like is when sponsors also 'participate'; not just with ads, but sharing insights, technical information, etc. Adds value, as well as revenue, to the site.

And, it builds stronger customer relationships than just a flashy ad. Reach out for 'partners' instead of advertisers.

I usually shop at places that offer forum member discounts. As an example I bought a timberline not too long ago. They still offer $15 off with OPE discount. I never even would've known they existed, if not for this forum.

I frequent a tractor forum as well. Have bought plenty of items from site advertisers that offer discounts to the forum members.

Everything costs money, & there's no shame in making money. However, people like free (my favorite 4 letter word), & discounted stuff. When you come to a forum you like, it aint much trouble to support the vendors/sponsors/advertisers that are willing to show some love.

2 cents.

Not sure if this has been covered but a hunting and fishing forum I’m on from time to time has a bunch of ads if your not logged in. I’m assuming there is ad revenue and encourages users to become members therebye driving up your member/subscriber count.

Yep there is a huge tractor forum that I go to and probably many here use as well. My little sub forum is and has been sponsored for a decade or better by one parts supplier and dealer. I buy as much stuff from them as possible. They support the site, share info, answer questions, and give technical information when possible. Sometimes for small things that are crazy priced I have gone elsewhere but 99% of my purchases are from that site sponser. One there good but one reason is that there a site sponsor of the forum which is a valuable tool.

Don’t get in bed with Baileys unless they are willing to do significant discounts on shipping for OPE members. I’m not ever going to pay $17 shipping for a $3 order again.

Baileys is really antiquated when you consider places like gap arborist supply, wespur, Bartlett arborist supply, midwest arborist supply, and treestuff/sherrill tree all offer way better shipping rates and service. Well maybe not treestuff/sherrill but the other places do offer great/good customer service and free shipping on orders over 99.

@Mastermind you might consider reaching out to these guys for sponsoring...

There is a Business Listings Forum at the bottom of the main page that is extremely under-utilized. There is only one category (Tree Services) and it is simply a general forum that can become cluttered with off-topic postings that drive the legitimate businesses ads to the bottom of the page, or off the page completely. Why not give the legitimate businesses "stickies", and charge them for the privilege monthly (a small fee) and if they miss a payment their sticky disappears. Instead of having one category, why not have a locked "Commerce" category header under the Business Listings, then inside the Commerce category have specific sub-categories for any and all interests that site traffic may find interesting. Then inside these sub-categories you would find the business advertiser's "stickies" that could be clicked on for more info or postings by the sticky owner, or comments by members. The business that owns the sticky would have the right to create their own stickies inside their forum in order to allow them to keep their specials and promotions at the top of their page.

Finally, get the Business Listings forum off the bottom of the main page and get it up at the top where it is the first thing you see when you come to the OPE site.
