how does honda hrx vka drive technically work?

I have a hydro hrx honda mower... so i'm familiar with that.
But I'd like to know, in technical detail, the drive type in the VKA model that has the plastic rotating dial then you push the paddles forward.
how do they achieve a dial-in variable speed? what is the clutching mechanism involved?

Exactly what @maisl said... belt slip.
Full speed is full engagement of the belt, anything less is just belt slip.
