So I've got 2 of these now the first one I put a meteor P&C on which I opened up the exhaust and raised it a small amount and put together without a base gasket and an open muffler. It runs rather nice with a 32

But I want to build another and go a little further off the rails. I'm thinking of using an OEM top end to start with and do some porting on it, at the same time before I go grinding on an OEM jug I have 2 of the farmertek P&C that I can play with to practice on. I started working on the lower transfers of the farmertek

Any additional advice from the gurus?

No guru, but I have played with several of the kit saws. One 660 with a ported Cross cylinder made 8.6 Hp on the dyno.

Did you advance the timing, pull the baffle out of the muffler (if there is one), and what are your port timing #s?

Have you timed the cylinders to see what you are working with?

Sadly I've never timed anything yet still have to set up a wheel but I have a wheel that I can use I bought recently. The saw in the video is running a meteor top end that I just widened the exhaust and raised it a little didn't touch anything else.

I guess a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.

If you want the saw to run like a 288 should, get yourself an OEM cylinder. The FT kit I did a year ago ran ok, but not great...and that was after setting the squish, widening & raising the exhaust, and doing a healthy muffler mod. The intake floor was already at 82 just by cutting 0.020" off the base to set the squish. The upper transfers were at 117 which is a little higher than I would want also. Lastly, the uppers on the FT jug don't have enough of a rearward angle toward the intake port. If the transfer entry angle wasn't so bad I would try it again and cut the squish and base & raise the intake floor with epoxy.

Ok so I got a wheel set it only took me the past 18 years to finally do it. I had already put the saw together the carb is kinda a pain to take off without pulling the cylinder. With the Holzfforma cylinder I ported for practice the exhaust is at 101 and the transfers are at 120 don't know where the intake landed it's without base gasket and squish is at .020 I cranked it just to see how it sounded and it sounds right sporty. I'm gonna run it long enough to seat the ring on it with the Holzfforma cylinder and then will pull it and build it with the OEM P&C.

So update on this saw I let a buddy borrow it that runs a tree service while I was rebuilding one of his saws and he liked it so much he insisted on keeping it. So now I bought another to start back over with the OEM cylinder.

Yeah I swapped out the 28" to a 32" bar and started using it at work( I always have a back up saw).
So far after the piston swap its been pretty good saw for dropping trees.

Sounds like mine, I put that 066 piston in it and I've used it to drop a least 30 trees and other bucking,(doesn't sound like alot but I've got a few saws in rotation!).
It starts well and does just about everything I need from a clone saw.
The only thing that I can complain about is the ergonomics, they are not the best ,but for my day they are fine.
