I work with guys who wants ceramic bearings in their bicycles all the time. Looking for that last little extra performance. In my opinion it’s not worth it, and they definitely don’t last as long. I’ve never seen a ceramic bearing outlast a steel bearing.

A good steel bearing with an ABEC-5 rating is very good, and lasts a long time. The higher the ABEC rating the more precise the manufacturing tolerances are. Rounder balls and more precise races. The Dominant ceramics are ABEC-5, so if you’re looking for smoothness get an ABEC-5 steel bearing.

There is a very reputable parts manufacturer in the bicycle business who do not put ceramics in their hubs, but rather use a very high quality steel bearing instead.
They’re looking for both performance and longevity. Steel balls are where it’s at.

The ceramic balls are harder than the steel races they sit in, so what happens is the races get pitted before the balls do. Any bearing/ball is only as good as the race they sit in. After that it’s just a vicious cycle, and the whole bearing is gone quickly after. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

Edit: Some words were confusing, so I edited this a little. Also wanted to add Randy's comment about making sure the bearings are C3 rated for heat expansion.

You are spot on with everything here Sondre......except maybe for the tolerance thing.

High speed bearing like those used in a saw need to be C3 rated. If they are too tight, they will bind up when heat and speed come together.

At least that's what my understanding of it is.

Thanks Randy. I guess the word "tight" wasn't the best to use here. Substitute with "precise". Rounder balls, and more precise races. Didn't mean it in the way that they are tighter together.

Edit: I'll edit my above post so it's not confusing. I'll also add Randy's comment.

Changed from vp 40:1 in 100% gas to 32:1 vp just because of these oils threads. Seemed to have plenty of oil in my cs-590 but more oil iz more better right?

Since this thread is all over the place anyway. Why does 100% gas have only 10% more gas but generally cost 25% or more than e10 gas...

So... decided to go check out their page as I haven't been there lately. They LEGIT claim this?!? What the flying ketchup bottle is this?!?!?!
"These run up to 0.0015" undersized for power gains, but we have found differences of a thousandth of an inch in all the manufacturers pins."
Seriously, what kind of operation is this? These sound like junk.
"Here, light this fuse."

Might of used a little much... Not gonna lie I singed my peach fuzz a little at hunting camp this fall. Stunk like ass all day as naturally it was right under the nostril.
Keep those whiskers away from butt hole and it won't stink like azz as much. :ciappa:
