Yes, it is .357 but from what I can tell it uses the exact same frame as my .38 Special 856. The five shot .357 cylinder is a bit skinnier and longer than the six shot .38 cylinder of the 856, meaning that the barrel of the 856 is a tiny bit longer because of the shorter front to back cylinder. The 605 and 856 are about the perfect snubnose platform for heavy .38's like the Ruger SP-101 is. Having owned both, I actually like the 605 and 856 better. I'm going to chronograph some more .38 Specials through the 605 to see if they lose velocity in the .357 chamber compared to the .38 chamber of my 856. So far, the 605 has been just as accurate as my .38's with every load I have tried. Just for curiosity, I chronographed a cylinder full of one particular .38 load through it and observed about 30 fps less than the 856, however it was really cold that day which could have affected the numbers. I also have a suspicion that the angle of the bullet passing through the screens can affect the numbers, I need to test that out some time.
Before work today I gave my $63.00 Hi-Point 9mm some exercise. This pistol is trying to make tight groups in spite of the heavy and creepy trigger, and still 100% reliable. It really likes the 125 grain Berry's plated truncated cone bullet over 3.7 grains of Hodgdon Target (Bullseye copy) at 1.050 so that's what I feed it. The throat is a little tight for lead bullet use right now, I'll try those again after a few hundred rounds of plated and jacketed slugs. If this pistol had more than a box of shells through it before it came to me I would be surprised. Absolutely no visual signs of wear or use, and the trigger on these guns smooths out quite a bit with use. My gunsmith actually recommends them to people looking for low cost protection.
