I know nothing about a Dolmar chainsaw ignition coil .However on the contrary I have modified Stihl 038 Mag that will try to pull your arm off if you pull it slow .That thing has the hottest mag of any saw I've ever seen .--no before it's asked the ignition timing has not been advanced .

The Dolmar has some kind of wind up easy start.

My 2159 has the decomp plugged. If it was operational, I supposed it would be easy to start…but not as easy as the 6100, you couldn’t slow roll it.

I think there’s been some good suggestions here, and I can only add that I agree that the 6100 would be a great saw for him. Super easy to start. Nice and smooth, and good runner stock. Excellent runner when ported.

I forgot that…Very smooth…in the vid I posted it was square chain in soft wood…didn’t even feel like a chainsaw.

Steve,

On Jack’s hybrid, I cut the band and then cut up into the chamber to reduce compression. See pics below. The saw only have 150# of compression and I added a 395 decomp button. The saw can be started with 2 fingers.

I also did a Solo 681 for him (a build I would love to forget) with the help of @huskyboy. On that one, I ground a “T” slot into the top of the exhaust port roof to bleed off starting compression. I think McColloch’s used them in past. It worked.

Here is Jack’s 446 chamber

I’ve tossed around dishing a piston in the center while leaving the squish are matched with the squish band as well. People believe that scavenging would be affected, but I’m not so sure how the overall performance would be affected.

On some saws, you can’t drop the jug enough to get the ex roof where you want it without excessive compression. A dished slug could make it work.

I think sometimes the coil can affect starting more than people think. One that fires at a lower rpm is better for old people or people with bad shoulders because they can’t pull it over with the speed us “normal” folks can. Example: ms460 coil vs a standard 440 coil and dolmar 7900 black 13500 coil vs maroon 13500 coil.

I too have had to build some fairly large saws for older gentleman that the number one criteria was that it was easy to start and started in three pulls or less.
Step one the build, Unlike Doc Al's brilliant machining(that I didn't know to even consider) I chose to build it much like a milling saw. Backed way off on my squish tolerance, advance timing very little to none at all, use a Husqvarna decomp with the hole bored oversize until it won't pop off until running and lastly the starter chord is either topped with a D handle or a Stihl Elastostart handle.
Step two carburetor set up, I make the L side a hair rich and open the throttle plate slightly to ensure a good charge comes in at start up.
Step three training. first off, use that decomp, secondly roll the engine over slowly to get the carburetor primed with fuel, thirdly engage the pawls place excess rope pointing down to use it as a momentum gainer at the start of the pull to get the motor rolling over with enough vigor to excite the ignition and bango should pop on the first pull and run on the second unless you're really fast getting that choke off and have a one pull start.
You would have thought that performance was going to be way off, but I found that to be nothing of the sort, it was hanging right in there just fine and owners were extremely happy, which is the most important thing of all, happy people.

McCulloch 5-10E , push button saws starts itself.
On that I've only seen one and at the time it didn't work .Jim Rigdon remade the battery using sub c cells used in battery tools and got it to work .Funny about that because Jim worked in the same automotive engine plant I did and it was only after he had been there over two years that I knew it .Big place, lots of people .

I dont think so. Firing too low speed would bite real hard.

Not if the timing isn’t advanced too far and if the decomp works properly. A friend of mine that is older couldn’t start his 500i because he couldn’t pull it over fast enough to fire the coil. The decomp also works poorly on that saw.

You get double trouble with a high compression unit with a hot mag on a slow pull over .Fact I had a little 2 cube Stihl 200T come back on me, in a tree no less that pulled a muscle in my shoulder .The little saw was reworked and I was trying to start it above my shoulder .My fault for being stupid .
