So I ruined a friend after letting him run a sausage stuffed jred and a minded husky. The modded ms390 I hooked him up with isn't enough anymore. Problem is he has some pretty fubared shoulders/rotators. Any suggestions on a saw thats forgiving to start?

I was going to build him a 372oe with a drilled out decomp. Probably just do a cut 268 dome piston and not much for bumping compression beyond that. Really want to lessen the chance of it snapping the rope back.

What are the expert's thoughts? He isn't going to buy firewood so I'm outta ideas beyond that and the above build.

Nothing wrong with a 372, but my easiest starting ported saw was a 440

Stihl isn't out of the question. I happen to have most of a 372 and most of a 272 on hand. So those were my first choices to keep cost down.

I do have a ms361 floating around somewhere. Wasn't sure if it would be a large enough difference in hp to be worthwhile. No 440 or 460 stuff at the moment.

The MS460 and MS660 OE coils have a built in spark advance delay.

Aftermarket coils don’t have that feature. [emoji90]

Coil fits the 440.

Made a big difference on a Farmertec MS440 I built. [emoji108]

What about a ported 346?

I actually have a easy start 2050??? Red 350. I was going to see if that would be any better for him.

Thing is he's used to a pretty good running saw now. Not sure if he'd consider going smaller.

I vote the 372 with drilled out decomp. I get the feeling that side mounted decomps should start easier than top mounted.

I'd like to see dyno comparisons of big saws using a decomp port in the exhaust port to see how much power is lost over the whole rpm range, and how big one could be before significantly affecting peak power, and the shape of the power curve. Aftermarket cylinders would be the best choice to experiment on to keep the cost down.

Vote for 372 as well. Without machine work, just a muffler mod they put out good power and easier to turn over than the Stihls. The 1128 family tend to bite if pull too slow, but 372 just won't bite.

79xx Dolkita Steve? They're like the most Husky 372 you can get without being a husky, but in bigger cc.

Would be the most expensive option if he decided to go that way. I don't have any dolly hookups or parts. Going for easy to rope over. Primary concern is just that. Power it just has to spin a 20" nicely. 7900 would be overkill for him. But I get the point.

I'm not familiar with what trees grow in his area. @CrystalRiver1 might know. My friend is fairly close to him. Gadsden Al. Nocalua mtn I believe.

If it going to wear a 20 inch bar my vote is a 357 or a 365

357 is a good option. He'd better not be in a hurry if he wants one. A certain pig renter has my xpg and I won't let my current one go until I get the g back. So he gonna have to wait if he wants one from me...... I'm not fully saw poor but not the horde I had a short time ago.
