This is the saw we are talking about. 341/340/100/102/400/401 are all the same except for cc displacement.
So a couple years back I tried some modifications on my 401 dolmar/makita. I had mixed results and a few things were never quite rite. The original saw was 6pin 3/8 LP and has a rev limited coil to 12,500rpm and calls for 8500rpm under load.
Original mods were squish cut to 0.016, opening plastic intake some, and swapping on an 026 rim style clutch drum. The drum was never right and it made my clutch wear unevenly.
The saw has sat since the Iowa 40cc shoot out since it never ran right. Had a little time so I pulled it down and took another go round with it.
First fix I got a while back was an alpina rim sprocket that is perfect size for a swap. Also put another used clutch on so it runs even. Clutch problem solved; sorry no pics of that.
Second thought was not enough gas and air because it always acted like it was starving for fuel. I thought about carb modifications, but why do that when another larger carb with bigger venturi that flows more air and fuel might do the trick. So after hunting through the shop I find a Stihl 028 super carb that fits perfect!
Little...
Big...
Problem becomes the 028 uses a choke flap in the air filter and not in the carb.
OEM in the back and 028 walbro in the front. So can I drill the 028 carb and install the OEM choke? Will I drill into anything critical??
Saw runs amazing and just don't want the annoyance of removing top cover and air filter to manually prime with my thumb. Thoughts anyone??
