SO I bought a used, but very nice, Vermeer 6040 disc mower Friday and when I checked the drain plugs for the 2 gear boxes (while I was changing the oil) there was small amounts of very fine metal on the drain plug magnets. Is this normal? The mower runs out great and I checked two of the cutter head gear sets and they still looked like they were brand new.

Anything metal to metal in fluid will have some wear. Was the magnets covered or just a tiny bit of shavings?

The magnet looked to be about the diameter of a 7/16" file and about 3/4" long. The magnet was probably half covered with very fine pieces. @concretegrazer I assume the oil had been changed in the past as the fill, check and drain plugs were all missing paint like they should when a socket had been used on them. Maybe they just never took the time to clean the magnets???

Clean the magnets and check again later, if they get furry real fast there could be trouble brewing. If they just collect a few fragments, don't worry too much, just keep an eye on it. Any failure in the past would leave fragments in the housing that drain and refill will not remove. They will show up on the magnet for a long time afterword. Most manufacturing leaves fragments behind too, my truck engine drain plug collected stuff for 50,000 miles, its at 220,000 now and running fine. I still get the odd burr on the magnet at oil changes, someday something will fail and I will find out what it is then.

I would not be too concerned with a few shavings. do the gearboxes have a thump or rough spot to them while running? As far as lube recommendations I couldn't help you in that department.

The ep o grease is very easy to find for around 3 to 6 bucks a tube my mistake I thought you were asking about gear oils. If you only need a tube check tsc if you need a case order it online save you some cash

Corn head grease is a great option thAnks for mentioning it jake. It would work great on that area. I put dexotroohic oil in pivot gearboxes all the time and it's way better than gear oil. We were filling gearboxes with #2grease for awhile before we found the multipurpose stuff.

we spike the boxes on the disc mowers with lucas oil stabilizer and never really seen a problem,,,, the agco epo grease is $$$ not bad compared to other brands and john deere corn head grease is some good chit i use it on steering and gear boxes.
semi solid 00 grease would turn it into a permanent yard ornament so don't use it.
