Thanks Dave for coming out the other day and sharing some time (and cheesesteaks) with us. We've been talking about this video / podcast thing for some time and finally have been able to make it happen. Super grateful for Dave's time.

We have some plans in the near future to make some more of these happen and share the knowledge in our community. It's a great format for us to share our stories!

If anyone else would like to share a conversation let's discuss!

Any way you guys could allow captions as a option for your next vid for us hearing impaired folks? A lot of channels on YouTube that I watch have them as a option.

Absolutely, thank you for letting me know. I tried using the auto generated subtitles at my side and they seem to work no problem.

Could you give it another shot?

Nah it was a good conversation. Cool to hear Dave’s story on how he started out.
Thank you for taking the time to watch.

Dave definitely has an interesting story and a neat take on things. I believe him and I are going to get together again in the future to explore some more

@Duke Thieroff safer = best performance and reliability. I got bit by a used saw with a poor quality top end on it which is what brought me to this forum a few years ago. Some say avoid AM altogether and some say some are OK.
Thanks!
Unfortunately there's probably not going to be one good answer for everything across the board....

Some manufacturers have a good widget for one thing but a not so good widget for another thing.

Probably the best thing to do is talk to whoever you're buying from when the situation presents itself.

A little luck is always good playing the Chinese parts lottery.

My belief in aftermarket parts is that they are a sensible solution for certain machines that typically would not be worth repairing otherwise. I think a lot of people would be hard pressed to put a $300 top end onto an MS-250 or an 026, but if you can make a functional saw out of those parts for a reasonable cost it does make sense.

If you're using the machine to make money for you have to rely on it completely It probably doesn't make sense to use aftermarket parts.

Typically on repair work I do in my shop I will not use aftermarket parts and only use OEM stuff. Sometimes on saws that I sell I do use aftermarket parts button I make it clear When selling them what is OEM and what is a copy.

That's not to put all the AM eggs in one basket, much like your pistons and cylinders you have made and makers from other country's like Taiwan, Hong Kong, Brazil, Turkey and Italy etc., do have a consistent product that can be counted on. This is where the Chinese have trouble with, as one time you can get an excellent quality part, so you think I'll get that again and be in good shape only to be dismayed at what you find and can't use. Its kinda like trying to buy clothing online and actually have it fit when it arrives.
So yes a clarification should be made in AM parts as they are not all created equal and you do a good job selling the better stuff.

Good analogy for a rant. When I find pants I like for work I generally buy 5 pairs. You can buy same pants same size and have some fit drastically different than others. Apparently they don’t know that 34” is 34”. I’ve found I have to go try on every pair.

Even then, though, we still offer some inexpensive kits that are just "ok" depending on the model they fit. Sometimes there's not a ton of options out there.

But if we have one that presents an issue consistently we have to find another source....

Dave is awesome - he's one of the original good old boys. We're lucky to have him.
