They are actually European Hornets, and they actively fly and hunt a night also, (side note don't wear a headlamp they are attracted to the light when dark).
They usually only nest in rotten timber of various types, and the nest has a foul odor. Check near by knot holes and house corners, they can be easily seen flying which makes tracking them easier.
The only times I've seen them on the ground is when they've found something delicious to eat either sweet or meat.
Trust me if there was a nest under there and you sprayed it you'd know it in a bad way. These sukers have a 1/4 stinger which they can hammer you with multiple times. The nests are generally bigger then a basket ball .
Once you locate the nest treating it can be difficult, powders and tracking poisons are effective.
They can also spray poison from their stingers, and will instinctually aim for your eyes , so if a head net is used saftey glasses are recommended.
