My neighbor once had accumulated a few compressors while looking for the right things to build what he wanted. He did move them on afterwards though.
For a while, We all said that he had OCD, "obsessive compressive disorder"

looking at it if there was no tank, how would you achieve consistent pressure on the output supply line? an unloader can't do that, the unloaders purpose is to relieve pressure between the pump and tank after the pump has shut off so the compressor can restart while not under previous pressure. I suppose one could be rigged to be a pressure regulation mechanism but I don't know how well that would work.

the compressor is positive displacement, so without some large enough buffer tank in relation to demand the output psi would skyrocket, more so the larger the compressor output is to the demand size, the air has to go somewhere otherwise psi climbs... rapidly... until something gets overloaded... but the compressor connecting rod, overheat melt the piston ring, kill the oil, and so on. Not to mention air delivery performance regarding pulsation and heat and moisture.

I don't think you can get around larger cfm compressor output = larger buffer tank otherwise performance suffers in terms of the compressor kicking on and off more often and rapidly changing psi on the output side. but you would have to factor in the cfm's and utilization pressures in relation to the cutoff output pressure... tool use at 90psi with an output tank max psi of 150 where the compressor would cycle however often running output [tank] psi between 100-150. And the cycle time is calculate-able... cfm {minute} and PV = PV where V = cubic feet. so u should do that math... or start posting those numbers here.
Have you never seen the hot dog tank compressors that roofers use? They typically run a 2 cyl compressor, and 2 small tanks as an air buffer, powered by a gas engine. If engine is running, compressor is turning. The unloader stays open and vents compressor outlet to atmosphere until tanks drop below xxpsi then it clises and refills the tanks...once peak pressure cutoff is reached, it ipens back up to vent to atmosphere.

I've seen compressors the size of a steam engine run with that sort of unloader setup.
Considering the company, (they re-furbished old machinery too) those may well have been conversions from steam engines.
They utilized the plumbing over several buildings it fed, to do the surge smoothing.

This is kind of where the question was going. Like the pontoon tank style gas compressor at harbor freight. Tank size vs compressor cfm is way different compared to similar sized electric models. Something around 10cfm (I'm probably incorrect on numbers) vs similar sized electric being like 2 or 3 cfm.

I see folks mention locating compressors in outdoor buildings. That is the best thing to do when possible. I hate the sound of a compressor. They are just as bad as the sound of a dust collector. I always try to get them in outdoor structures when possible. I still remember when I was 3 years old and Dad was selling or coons, rats, and others to the fur buyer. I was in the shop and an air compressor came on scaring the sheit out of me. I started crying and literally sheit my pants

I jump every time lol I can have my die grinder going full speed and it still startles the hell out of me. Even worse when the motor stops and it releases pressure 🤣

3cylinder 2 stage10 hp 220v 3ph 55 cfm compressor on a 180 tank when the contactor snaps in sounds like a 30-06 going off. dosen't bother me when it fires up , sure makes customers jump though.

Can you repair a tank that has a small leak? Thinking about tapping it and screwing a release valve in there.

Dont do it..... tank leak? Its compromised... thats coming from a guy that patched a leaking tank, and the next time i used it the whole bottom slpit open like a hot dog bun and launched said compressor off the rafters of the shop 14ft in the air, and landed 6"away from where i was on a creeper under the truck, cracked a 6" reinforced slab where it landed... 6" further and i would be a leutenent dan.... 🤣 aint got no legs...

55cfm from a 10hp 220v?? Damn I didn't think 10hp could even achieve 45cfm. The concrete place I worked for had a 4bt Cummins powered compressor making 50cfm. It was pretty old though. If imagine newer systems can produce more with less. My sister works with a fancy ass scroll compressor. That thing is quite as hell!! Before that they had a Chicago rotary screw that was also quite as hell.

Thanks for the answer. About what I figured. Anything compressed scares me.

Youre welcome, my ears still ring whenever i think about that day 🤣🤣🤣 theres a metric f-ton of energy in 30 gals of air compressed to 150psi....

🤣 nope this was back in 2006, and it was JB weld.... held great.... bottom of the tank didnt though... turned out there was about 5 pounds of mud and rust water in the bottom of the tank.... most of the bottom 3rd of the tank was about 1/16th of an inch thick....
