This guy does a good job of explaining it
Nickel is a chemical element, atomic number 28 on the periodic table and contains no steel. Truth.Nickel is very corrosion resistant. I don't think nickel contains any steel.

The discoloration is actually from an etching process they aluminum receives before plating. It sort of looks like a heat effected zone from welding but it's just the etching. It's an alloy, depending on the manufacturer. I was told years ago by a long time bike mechanic that the outer appearance of a chrome cylinder will be lighter than that of a Nikasil cylinder because of the higher temps involved with Nikasil plating, but I don't think that would apply much these days due to the different base alloys that manufacturers are using for cylinders.
The question is, do you have the diamond tools required to finish the cylinder bore though?
No, but I really think we should lol.
We grow nickel plates for my press here. So If I was to "plate" one the whole thing would be covered lol.
Dis is gettin way to teknickle!
