Yes, I like it. Where'd you get that, Adam?
Some company moded chainsaw power head to be a concrete cutter. They cheap out by keeping the original clutch and drum configuration and made this to drive belts.
Another idea is finding a 371K saw and take its power head. Or just take its clutch drum. It's belt driven and can fit on 372 chainsaw DIRECTLY. If you want a more powerful power head. Go for 3120K.
Its drum is also use to drive belts.

FWIW:

Sold a Wards 5.0” (Remington PL55) to a fellow to power a Lewis winch. 82cc, reed valve.

It would only skid small stuff single line. Larger logs, two part using a snatch block worked.

Dan,you neither need a 372XP,nor a 3120XP unless you plan to move an excavator.I am watcing this guy and he is quite awsome.I don't know what your machinist skills are or if you can have access to special tools like a lathe or a column drill (i am not sure if i'm saying it right) but this build seems very easy.He is using a Makita EA4300F and as you will see,it is quite powerfull.Check him out:

Is it done yet? :D

My take. I think chain or belt drive is a better way to go than direct crank drive because it allows you to bring some mechanical advantage via gearing in. Saw peak torque at 9000 crank rpm might be too fast a feed speed for the winch arbor?

That thing has a built-in planetary gear reduction. Pretty neat.

Nice. I’ve seen his other chainsaw powered videos. I think I’m leaning towards using gearing to increase torque and slow the rate of pull in case something gets caught up or breaks while pulling.

That’s super nice, but not in the budget right now. What kind of rope do you use with the capstan?
Double braided polyester. 1500 lb. straight line pull strength. The wench cost $975.
The gear reduction is 200:1
Engine size 35cc
Weighs 20lbs

I bought the winch for the same reason you’re looking to build one. To drag good wood out where I could get to it.

How to gear the speed down is quite a question. Gears are always better.

The build with the Makita, its stil using the planetary gears from the winch.
So direct drive is not a problem.

There is a difference between capstan and drum/cable that’s worth knowing. The pulling capacity of the drum style is diminished as the cable is wound up. The capstan winch always will deliver its rated capacity and there is no limit to the length of rope you can use.

Worn gear reducer.

With a double reduction, one can multiply available torque a bunch.

It will be slow however.
