I had been wanting an alternative to the wide pink wheels (constant dressing) or the flat plated ones (not the profile I was wanting) for several yrs now and always had other work keeping it on the back burner.

Couple of months ago I turned the blank out and sent it off to be plated. They got it done, boxed it up and shipped it.

Only problem was when the package arrived it wasn't the blank that I had sent them. It was a 3/16" sharpening wheel. I got a couple of those already. I matched the profile on a Stihl raker that I liked ( not a round radius) so for a shade tree machinist it was a bit of time to make. I sure didn't want to start over.

On the phone again with them and they haven't a clue where my wheel went. The work order # etched on the 3/16 wheel matched my invoice for the blank I had sent in.

Luckily after a couple more weeks I got a call and my wheel was in Idaho. I had his and he had mine.
They sent us both shipping labels and we swapped.

Finally got it mounted up and running.P1020848 (Small).JPG

That looks really good! Grinders are great for consistency in raker height but not so good for raker shape..... you have addressed this issue well.

It works well. Hard to tell prom the pic, there are 2 different radius. Hard to get that shaped onto the pink wheels consistently.

I don't suppose you'd be willing to share how much it cost? I'd love to have something like that made up, the grey wheel I have with my Stihl USG is a royal PITA to dress

Us Diamond wanted $275 just to plate it or $350 if they cut the blank.

I bought passed out! Told him "You sell your flat raker wheel for $105 and you do it all."
He wouldn't budge.

Called Radiac Abrasives and was quoted $75 to plate or $125 if they did it all, one radius.
Month or so went by b4 I got around to making the blank. New rep in my area and he wanted $180. I told him what the other fella quoted and he said "Holy *s-word I can't do it for that."
I told him it couldn't have more than doubled in such a short time and he agreed to $80.

I wanted to use aluminum but chose steel for the fact that aluminum is a one time deal.

Different process for plating aluminum and no strip and re plate option like steel.

That's awesome, I might have to get in touch with radiac abrasives and see if they can make me up a couple of wheels for rakers and cutters, my grey wheels on the USG are shrinking rapidly and I despise dressing them! Have you tried the cyclone wheels from baileys? I've heard some good things about them

Same here on the wheels.
I've been going to do this for 6-7 yrs. My projects always get pushed to the back of the bench.

What was the reason for the two radiuses?

I might just get them to make me one up same as yours, I'm too lazy to mess around with the radius on the lathe

I told them to copy it while they had it, figured it would be a good seller against their competition. Forgot to ask if they did.

The radius is mostly .210 other than the very front and I adjusted that by trial and error to an unmolested cutter that I liked the smoothness of.

I think leave it all at .210 would be fine also.

I'll get in touch with them and see if they've still got it, I despise dressing wheels especially for depth gauges
