So. Bought a couple 262s as projects. The newer one is fine as is, just cleaned it up.
The other was "ported", or, butchered depending on opinion :p
I tried to clean up the rough everything but I think the exhaust was lowered way to much. Intake looks interesting. Not sure what was used on the transfers, lol.
The saw "ran" but had a big air leak from the carb block gaskets.

Throw it back together with new gaskets and see what happens or fing a replacement cyl?
Squish was 037-038 with OE gasket so need to keep a gasket in there.

I say put it together and try it first. Looks aren’t everything when it comes to a port job. Make sure the port bevels are good. If your squish with a gasket is .037-.038 you’d likely be fine to go without a gasket, just use a sealant. Just make sure you still have about .017 squish or more.

That looks a little like the first cylinder I tried to port. I'm pretty gracious on a first try. Why do you think the exhaust is too high? Put a timing wheel on it to make sure.

This is ok? Bdc. I guess low, not high :p

Exhaust was extremely rough so spent a lot of time sanding.

So, it was you? 🤣
I have redone all bevels. Not all were sharp but enough. Left the intake alone, other than beveling

Well, duh...hadn't cleaned the carbon out of the combustion chamber ...squish is just under .020.

I also port-matched the muffler and gasket and opened up the muffler...which had not been done.

From your pics, what I see, is possibly repairable.

There are many good 262 jugs around. They aren’t hens teeth for sure.

I see a huge intake, which I particularly hate. There’s no reason it should be more than 25% bigger than the intake entry IMHO. I actually don’t widen it at all in my own 262 recipe.

Velocity matters in a work saw. In a high rpm cant saw, where its load on the chain can be factored into the build, it’s ok if it’s bigger.

In a worksaw with huge ports, once you load the saw up and rpm drops, it has a rough time recovering RPM because the volume in the huge ports lacks inertia.

The intake can be made smaller with properly applied JB weld. The only issue would be the ex roof. It can be dropped with a band and base cut, but depending on how much it’s been raised, it may not be salvageable.

How much do the finger ports gain you? Is it worth it? By the way, that's gorgeous.

yea, I'm amazed at pics like that...wish I had the talent.

48mm Cabers showed up today so will get it back together and see what happens :p
the ring gap was good but I felt a slight lip of wear on one side, so... There was a .004 difference in measurements going around the circle. New rings are cheap insurance.

It runs, quite well. Snappy too.
Can't seem to load a video :(

Can't get more than 12,500 out of it at near 1/2 turn out. Hmm...
Will get them both in some wood when temps are below 100+ :p
Hmm, a bit low. Cold was about 170. Warmed up, the newer saw is only 165.
Both have a .030 or so squish with base gasket. I went ahead and used the new gasket on the ported saw. The old gasket was .030, new, .020.

I always compression test a cold in ran engine. If I feel I have fuel washed the cylinders I start it and retest the remaining jugs after cold

got both out yesterday to help a friend with a dicey, heavy leaner Cottonwood before it took out his fence. Ran the newer saw with 24" comp chiz. It was not impressive but was ok. Then ran the "ported" one with 20" comp/chiz and...huge difference. Kept rpms in the cut way better than the other. 16" wood so nothing big.
the older one got a new ring so will give it time to seat better and see if compression improves.
The newer saw I'll pull the jug, do some mild porting and re-ring it after cleaning up anything inside I might find. Closer inspection shows a small streak along one side of the exhaust, looking through the plug hole so...
hey, they were supposed to be projects :p
