They Multiply!

I know that I am not the only guy with hoarding personality traits on this forum. I am aware of some of the things I 'collect'. But I am trying to sort out some areas, and have been surprised by some of the things I found; stuff I forgot I had.

Take guide bars. I know that I pretty much have 1 or 2 bars for each working saw, with an extra spare here and there. Then there are the other bars that maybe you pick up at a garage sale, or that came with a parts saw, etc. I had a few places where I put them

Today I started to look for a specific length / mount / pitch combination, and was surprised at how many I had. Not trying to boast, because I know that there are guys here with hundreds (not counting the guys who sell bars for a living!). Thought I might have about 15. Turns out that I can send bars to every State in the Union, and still be generous with Guam, Puerto Rico, and several other territories!

Organization / Inventory Strategies?

I have seen some nice photos where guys hang lots of bars, sorted by size or type, but I don't have that kind of space available. I am going to have to put together a spread sheet, with columns for:
mount / length / pitch / gauge / DL count / brand / saws they go with / and any comments.

Nice thing about a spread sheet like Excel is that you can also add columns for things like 'RSN', 'narrow kerf', 'condition', manufacturers' markings, etc. and hide them, so that the information is there, but it does not take up screen space.

For example, when trying to verify bar gauge, I noted that some are marked '.058', but they are worn enough to take a .063 chain - good stuff to know! I can also print out the spread sheet, and attach the info to the bars with clear packing tape - some have clear markings; some are worn; others are more 'generic' with no logos, size, pitch, gauge, or mount info on them.

I also want to be sure that I don't get rid of any bars that I acquired for a specific saw - easy to do if the bar fits, but has a different brand marked on it.

I don't know how many bars I have, don't really care. They're hard to sell due to shipping even though I have some I'll probably never use. I did notice I'm about out of the 24" bars that fit Stihls. I put these on the refurbed 1127 saws I sell if that's what the new owner wants. When I sell these saws, I give a choice of 18, 20, or 24" bar (all new). Most take the 20 but some want the longer bar. I had been getting them from Bailey's but noticed the price has significantly increased since my last order a couple years ago. I've still got some 20" in stock so maybe I'll just take the 24" out of the next ad. I currently have zero saws for sale. Just haven't taken time to repair or build any up.

Lol. Funny thread.
I bought a bar, stored it away and forgot about it. Bought another one, stored it, couldn't find it. Bought the same bar a 3rd time, then found all of them. lol
WTF

I did that with a saw once. A Mac CP125 I put away behind some others
on a shelf and forgot about it. Bought another then found the first one.

Are you into bar rehab, too?
Several of these are worn bars that still have some life left in them. As @fearofpavement notes, they have limited $ value, but if they fit a saw, and they hold a chain . . .

I can do some bar maintenance, but lack the equipment and abilities to weld, re-groove, etc.
