So I'm working on the father in law's push mower with a 2015 Briggs 450E and intermittent no spark. I'm thinking the coil is going out. Reason being, the wire connector tab on the coil that goes to the oil switch always has continuity with the rest of the engine. As in, take the kill wire completely off, touch one DMM probe to kill wire tab on coil and the other to the engine and the continuity buzzer sounds continuously. So my thinking is, this metal tab on the coil should never have continuity to ground unless the kill wire is attached and the kill switch is engaged. If it always has continuity, then what difference would the kill switch make? Or am I just totally misunderstanding what things here?

Is the resistance shown by the DMM between 1 and 3 ohms?
If so, this is the resistance of the primary winding, and it is completely normal for the continuity tester to buzz when the resistance is so low.

I think you will immediately understand why this happens if you look at this simple diagram:

Thanks so much for that diagram. I don't remember what the reading was, I was just listening for continuity. So, now it makes sense that the coil tab would always show continuity to ground. I guess the kill switch gives the electron flow a shortcut out of the windings, stopping the spark?

I always pull the kill switch wire completely off and if no
spark then pointing very much at the coil. Lot of people
get caught with faulty switches that is not breaking the
circuit
