My son will soon inherit my 2004 Chevy 2500HD 4x4, 6.0 gas. I have ran a little bit of everything including Cooper AT3s and General Grabber ATX. The Coopers had awful wear. The Generals have 45,000 and will probably get another 5-7k. He starts driving in July and I was starting to think about new tires. Does anyone have any experience with the Toyo OpenCountry AT3s? Any other suggestions? I may just go back with the General Grabbers.

I think @Loony661 has or had a set of the Toyo's.
I have the Generals on both my trucks.
I ran Goodyear Duratrac on my old 06 but the prices skyrocketed for the sizes my current 2 trucks have.
I haven't found a tire that suits my needs better than the grabbers. My only issue is they aren't the greatest in heavy rain but do great in everything else.

I have had the Toyo Open Country MT and also the Toyo M-55’s. Toyo makes great tires, and I don’t think you would be disappointed with the AT3’s. Another one to look at would be the Open Country CT. It’s a bit harder compound, but will last a long time.

I’m currently running the BFG Terrain HD tires on my pickup, and they are definitely more aggressive, but have provided excellent traction in a variety of conditions. I’ve been impressed with them so far. If they wear decent on my diesel pickup, I’ll probably but another set of these.

I put 60k miles on a set of BFG AT KO2s. I wanted them again but they were ungodly expensive and one thing led to another and I ended up with Firestone Transforces which are not an AT but they lasted around 80k miles. 2000 F250 Super Booty.

I've had a couple sets of Toyo's AT2s. They ran quiet, never flatted, stayed balanced and lasted forever. My only complaint looks like it's been addressed with the new AT3's. Better traction. The Maxxis Razrs I'm running now will be done by summer. At the moment the Goodyear Boulders are the frontrunners, but these new AT3s look good too. If they're everything the AT2s were with better traction then they should be an outstanding tire.

You guys get way better mileage out of tires than I do.
I've got around 90k on my diesel and it's on its 4th set. I typically replace when they are 6/32- 5/32 tread depth however. I've never had an issue selling my old tires. There's a huge difference in traction between a new tire and a half tread tire.
That truck is either sitting or pulling my 5th wheel and towing definitely wears tires faster.
I replace them on my plow truck at a similar tread depth but they last longer as that truck doesn't tow anywhere near the weight or distance of the other truck.

I'm overdue for a set on my F 150. 50,000 and 3 winters on a set of Cooper AT3 4S. Now that they're discontinued, I'm open to suggestions from you guys that have to get around in the white stuff.

The Maxxis Razrs I've got now have been very good in snow and mud. They were the least expensive name brand MT at the time. They're quieter than you'd think and will have around 50k on them when replaced. Similar tread pattern to Grabber X3. I've also towed a fair amount with them.

I just got a set of BFG KO3's on my 02' DMax crew cab and ran them to Colorado and back. They did great on the 3 mountain passes I had to cross during sideways snow. They had great traction, steer nice and very little tire noise.

Cooper AT3s are still in production.
I'm glad 'cuz I'm getting great ride and traction on mine. I haven't worn out a set yet, so I can't speak to longevity.
I had BFG KOs before. Very capable tire, but noisy, and now very expensive.

Venom Power Terra Hunter XT in the 10 ply LT variety. Full tread depth. Great wearing. Lots of traction wet, dry, snow. $100-150 less per tire than the ones you listed. I had zero issues balancing, and it was a crappy Walmart tire center that did it. Mine were about $800 including mounting/tire disposal/stems/etc out the door and done. Keep with metric size vs inches and they're cheaper also.
They're basically BF KO2 but $600 less a set, and I think they actually have better traction and deeper tread, and last longer. They are marginally louder than those you listed, but nothing like a MT tire, and it's a higher pitch and not a rumble. I don't think they can be beat honestly.

I hear ya, most tires I’m lucky to get a full year out of. The Toyo M-55’s I actually got 23 months - longest lasting tire I’ve ever experienced with my pickup. My pickup see’s a lot of gravel and off road, taking me to job sites and back. So the tires aren’t babied.

Grabbers are good but they get weird in certain lt sizes if you haul a lot of weight. You’ll see them roll around on the sidewalls. It might have been a short lived issue but there were some sets swapped out and the distributor gave credit for them. I like them. I’ve run them on my crvs and rangers. The hankook dynapros are another good option. No experience with the toyos but people seem to like them.

BFG AT for the win
Ran them for years on a half ton, but they didn’t wear well at all when I got the truck. I had the dealer work them in on the deal and they didn’t last 30,000 and rotated them as they needed.

My work truck is like that. We have to get Goodyears or Firestones that are on contract. I generally run Firestone Destination M/Ts and I MIGHT get 20,000. Goodyear Wrangler MTRs were worse. They don’t offer an AT for our work trucks, so it’s either a highway tread or MT. The mud tires, a diesel, and gravel equals short mileage. My new truck has 21,000 on it and 16,500 has been gravel two track.

The grabbers I have on have been great tires. Just seeing if there is something out there worth going to. I my wind up with BFGs again, lol.
