Nice analogy Steve! Dont deny it. I was talking to my wife this morning and she turns to me and says," you've got a problem!". I've known it all along...oh whoa is me...doubt it...
Reason I happen to know, my cup runneth over as well at the moment.

What temperature do you cut at? I have 550 mark 1 and 2, they both love the cold. When Temps get up there auto tune is a pain. This is where 346 separates itself. The little extra fuel the 346 drinks keeps the beast nice and cool. I have 2 346 and will not part with them, legendary saws.

The newer saws run a lot hotter for sure. I did a healthy muffler mod to a stock stihl ms462c. When shutting it off and leaving it in the sun… it no longer vapor locked as easy. Heat soak was no longer a issue since heat could get out. The same can be said for any of the other newer strato saws by other manufacturers. They run hotter than the older saws. I believe that’s part of the reason why a lot of them have primer bulbs to pull cooler fuel through the carb.

346 gets my vote. I'm not sold on a saw that could need plugged into a computer to resolve an issue. I'm my own mechanic. My local dealer is a Messicks and they suck.

The new technology doesnt bother me. They should have it figured out. I'm not going to get rid of the 346. I'll tty em both for awhile and see which one I pick up most when I want a light saw for cutting.

Do we all have carb fed trucks still? I know I don't. So I'll happily take a autotune mark 2 saw. I would hope those creases are now all but ironed out. Anyway I live in the UK. Rarely see anything above 30 degrees. And even then I'll stick my saw in the shade if I'm leaving it a while. [emoji106]

I'm pretty good at finding decent deals on saws, and I haven't seen a single 346 around.
Eventually I will probably come across one but they must not get tossed very often, the 550s litter the scrapyards though.

I suspect one of the reasons the 550's get tossed out so often is the cost of the piston/cylinders, pretty much double/triple a 346 and rarely a deal to be found. That and the scored 550 cylinders don't seem to clean up as readily as the 346's.
I have 3 550's been sitting in a box for lack of reasonable $ p&c's...

For some reason it appears that the mkII cylinder kits are somewhat less but still double.

The 346 cylinder kits (as well as 357 and 372) are about the best deal out there of really any decent saw, so for me that's a big up vote for the 346...

The 550 is a fast saw in my book. But I havent put it up against the 346 yet. The 346 is ported too. I'll do it when I come back from vacation. I just might send the 550 off to get ported. We'll see. I'll keep you updated in about a week.
Did you ever get the 550 ported and run against the ported 346?
