I had a rototiller given to me last fall and dug it out to see if i could get ot going. I ran when they put away few years ago. So i hooked my spark tester to it (kund that lights up a light bulb if that matters) and nothing. Take tester off plug and touch on cylinder head and it lights up while cranking. Think oh maybe plug is bad. Grab a new plug and same thing.
No spark either when touching plug on cylinder either. Only tester will light up.

I then tested the 2 plugs on my mower and they had good spark.

So why would my tester light up but no spark on plugs?
I clean flywheel of any rust that was on it too.
Regapped coil and cleaned it as well.
Unhooked kill wire off throttle to rule that out. Never unhookek where the wire bolts to motor. May try that tomorrow.

Any ideas why no spark on plugs but tester lights up? Thanks

Squirt some gas down the plug hole, install the plug and give it a crank. If it has spark she'll fire. I've never owned a spark tester.

I would bet money it has points. If so you can switch the coil for a modern style coil and it will work. We raced the flathead for years and swapped coils all the time. Awesome little engines, they make alot of hp when done right

Usually with points it's just some corrosion on the points contacts .It doesn't take much .Burnish same then take a piece of paper and wipe the contacts to make sure nothing ,like a piece of grit is stuck on them .Test them with a continuity tester . Usual that gets it .Very seldom does a Briggs coil go bad .For that matter if you don't want to pull the flywheel a solid state after market coil is not that expensive .
