Good evening everyone I am in dire need of a ignition coil for my 1980’s 285CD HUSQVARNA chainsaw. I have looked high and dry and there was a guy selling one brand new a year or so ago just curious if anyone still knows where I can get one. My person email is Hitekrednek78@hotmail.com. I am willing to pay too dollar as this is my old girl but runs like no other saw I have. Thank you very much everyone.

That's a sweet saw, I never even seen one in person.

Hey I have had good luck with the Bosch ignition using a transistor chip to replace the trigger. This is what I do on my dolmar ones

What coil is it? The Bosch setup or SEM?
It is a totally Bosch setup, all original. Just stopped sparking. If I remove the woodruff key I can spin the flywheel by hand with a little lubrication. Measuring the output of the exciter coil by connecting a scope to the kill switch lead. With a good spin I get about 100 volts but no spark. The high voltage coil has about 2 ohms primary and 5k ohms secondary which seems normal. Connecting a 4uF capacitor to the kill switch lead and the primary of the HT coil and spinning the flywheel charges the capacitor to about 100 Volts. Then by shorting out the 100 Volts should transfer that energy to the HT coil. The energy is given by 1/2CVV (ie V squared ) which gives
1/2x4x10^-6x100x100= 20mJoules of energy. Still no spark. I don’t know what to do next. ANY IDEAS?
Seth

I would say the foggysail fix would probably fix it. Solder in the new capacitor here. @av8or3 could probably help with which ones to get

You heat it up with a heat gun and it peels right out. Hopefully @av8or3 will pop in soon he ordered me a few capacitors so he knows which one to get. And may have the link to the fix on as

Here ya go with some pics and here’s a link for the capacitors.

Soften the potting with a heat gun, hair drier and then you can pick it out with a pocket screwdriver. Clean down to the circuit board here. IMG_4787.jpeg
Now, cut the trace and remove about 1/8” of it. This removes the faulty cap from the circuit.
IMG_4788.jpeg
Now solder a wire to that long trace, make it long enough to reach your capacitor (where ever it’s mounted).

Now, run your wire and re-pot the module with something. I use two part epoxy.
IMG_4791.jpeg
Before you pot it , it’s a good idea to check for continuity between the case and your new wire. You don’t want that. It means your wire is touching the case.
Fix it before proceeding.
I mounted this one in the corner of my airbox using silicone etc to secure it. You run your new wire to one side of it and ground the other side somewhere nearby.

Here’s the cap. IMG_4793.jpeg
Here’s where it sits. Cap is not polarized.
Hope this helps.

Looks at that Jim hooked you up with step by step instructions should be really easy to fix. If that doesn't work I might have some dolmar ignitions that would get you up and running would just need to see your ignition and flywheel to see if they will 100 percent match up

Thanks a million. I have exposed the track on the circuit board. I did not proceed as I saw no way of removing the capacitor. I have now seen your photos and description and it all seems plain sailing. See progress so far. Interesting if you remove the woodruff key you can spin the shaft easily to see if you get a spark. I will come back when the job is complete. Seth 8837

Brilliant of you to pass me on to av8or3 hopefully I can solve the problem. Seth8837 I did not reply earlier as I got the wretched virus and my fibre Wi-Fi stopped for some unknown reason. Seth8837

Jim and I both have made this repair recently and his pictures are of a dolmar 123. It is the same ignition though. If the cap didn't fix it I think you are in the market for a new ignition. I have seen the repair not work on one ignition could be something else failed besides the capacitor in this one
