Hi I converted a 261 to 262xp , I also lowered the cylinder and achieved a .019 " squish . I widened out the ports but nothing on the limit. Opened up the muffler as well.
My issue is I got the H needle turned in all the way and I'm getting 13,400 with solid 4 stroking. I checked my metering needle height , it looks flush to me . Should I lower it more ? I've never had this problem on any saw before.
Anyone else had this issue please chime in thanks !

How did it run before ? Or did it? Sounds like the carb is bad to me , by what you've described

It didn't run, the carb is rebuilt , didn't see any issues with the carb when I put a new kit in it. The runs fine the way it is but didn't seem normal having to turn in the H needle so far to lean it out

Ok I re checked my metering lever height, it's flush with a straight edge.
I do have a 254 flywheel in this saw as well. Was the timing different between a 261 and 254 ??
Also I had the squish set to .019".
I since removed custom gasket and put in the stock gasket being the saw timing would have been retarded a bit.
I'll try that and see if anything is different.
Unless the H needle seat is maybe damaged?

My online sources show that the 154/254/257/261/262 all shared the same flywheel.

Ok that's what I remember when I put the 254 flywheel on it. I'm hoping to try soon, been getting snow tire day in a row and been plowing alot , got to love April in Lake superior country!

Ok I got to try the saw, I put stick base gasket in and now it's even worse, 12,500 is peak rpm with plenty of 4 stroking...
I got a oem walbro kit in the carb I'm wondering if the H needle seat is messed up?

Did you clean and then rebuild or just clean the carb? I would try sonic cleaning the carb to get into all the passages. Also I can't remember but is the crank on the 261 the same as the 262XP? Maybe that is effecting the timing.

Same crank, cleaned and new kit installed, I'm thinking the H needle seat is messed up

In general, 254/257/261/262 share same flywheel

If I remember correct there was at least 3 different flywheel out for 254SG/XPG, I've seen differences magneto for generator on same #number also, wouldnt surprise me if there was several different versions for 254SE/XP as well. From around 88 254 flywheel are same as we have on 262, two versions.

I dont know if there is any timing different between those versions.

Since you have 261/262 you should have last generation 254 flywheel, you can post up the # your 254 flywheel have and I am pretty sure someone with 261/262 can peak in and verify that you have last generation.

What carburator do you have on your 261/262?

Thanks for info, I'm thinking I have the earlier model because I changed out the plastic crank seal cover for the magnesium seal cover. I have the 144 HDA carb.
I got a good used one on the way so I'm going to try that one and see how it works.
The saw runs great just still too rich at wot.

144 HdA is the original 261 carb and that is good, I was slighlty worried that you had swapped the carb out with an 254 carb since you had 254 flywheel.....

There is an number on your flywheel that is very easy to spot , you only need to remove the topcover and turn thge engine around a bit and you will see it, post up that number and we will try to figure out what 254 flywheel version you have :)

I dont think there is timing difference between them, will check my 3 different 254 flywheel later for you.
