I would guess this has been covered before. I know on the early 201t you had to advance the timing to get any decent performance out of them. Then Stihl updated the ignition module, flywheel and carb. Is there any benefit to advancing the timing on a 201t with the updated parts listed above? Saw is stock other than a muffler mod.

Mine is a few years old with a manual adjust carburetor. The timing advance and muffler mod made a huge difference on mine. Not sure about yours.

No. As a matter of fact, they end up too far advanced if you do.

I was wondering if that would be the case. Stihl seems to leave a bit of room for being able to run a bit more advance in most of there saws thats why I was asking. Thanks for the info

Mine is a 2017 Mtronic with a muffler mod (like the one Brad has shown in the past) and it’s advanced. It runs much better than stock.

This won’t make make me real popular, but I prefer it to my 200t (My 200t runs real good and it’s 100% stock) I cut with the 201t last week when it was 90 degrees and high humidity. It started easily and restarted multiple times with no hassles or me needing a screw driver. Idled well instantly spooled up....it is one of my favorite saws.

You could always try to advance it and move it back to stock if it’s worse.

Is this still the truth? Asking for a friend who has a couple (about a year old) and wants to advance the timing in an attempt to make them run better.

What happened that made you come to this conclusion? Slower cut speed? Odd sound? Running rough? I've never experienced a saw with too much advance, so trying to learn something. I know people mention popping, but what's that supposed to mean?

Mtron V1 likes a touch of advance or none. Mtron V2 (newest) seems best without any advance. OG 201 adjustable carb version likes 6-8degrees advance, adjustable carb updated version likes 4 degrees.

That’s with a tightened squish, raised primary transfer and dual muffler outlets. Tailored for 5-10,000’. YMMV.

Just my mod preferences.

If the timing is too far advanced, the engine will usually pop under load.

Some engines actually gain more with the timing slightly retarded.

Just gotta test.
