I’ve had an old devil with Power Products engine that by reassembling the starter and rotating the magneto base it would run either direction.

Most of the gear drive versions were capable of such antics.

Yep was a big thing for the old Mercury snowmobiles, 2 sets of points and the key turned backwards to use the reverse timing set. Wrap a strap around the clutch and running backwards. Mercury also did this on the old in-line six cylinder outboards, was direct drive to prop and you started the engine backwards for reverse. These outboards became known as dock busters because of all the smashed docks from poorly tuned ones that didn’t fire right up when needing reverse. Ne polaris and skidoo’s run the engine backwards but rely on electronics to slow engine enough to reverse rotation

Had a ms361 do the same thing but it was a cheap Chinese coil that did it, ran backwards once I shut it off then restarted it thing ran like a lazy turd because the timing seemed to be all over the place.

I had a little Echo CS 346 that would do this if I let go of the cord at just the right time.
The first time it happened I thought I had the chain on backwards. shut off the saw and looked things over.
Did it again and then the light bulb lit.

I have a mate who swears his CR480 popped and farted and then finally started after a particularly stubborn kicking session one day only to throw him over the handlebars as it flew backwards the minute he let the clutch out.
He tells a great yarn, but just maybe it did happen?

When I worked on a golf course in high school, they had EZ-Go carts with big Fuji 2 strokes that ran backwards for reverse. I think some busses with Detroit's did the same thing.

Had an echo 660 that was starting to have coil problems run backwards once. Backfired in the cut and just quit cutting. Pulled it out and revved it a couple times and it nosed down when I'd hit the trigger. That's when I noticed the chain running in the wrong direction lol.

Shut it off then cranked it again and we were back at it. Coil straight up died shortly thereafter.
