Hi guys, been lurking as a guest for awhile now, and have a question for you. I think I have a husqvarna 154 (tag is gone so I looked up some part numbers on the top cover, carb, etc, and came up with 154). The plastic clutch cover was very worn, and missing some parts for the chain brake, so I bought a new one at the dealer (part 503 74 7073). Before I ordered, I looked up the part on jackssmallengines website, it said it should fit the 154 and 254.
When I brought home it to install I found that instead of tabs sticking out the back, the new cover has a peg just behind the brake band. My saw has no place for the peg to fit. Should I just grind off the peg, or possibly drill a hole or slot for it? Anyone else run into this? I'll attach 2 pics of what I'm talking about. Thanks! And hope this isn't too long winded. The pencil tip shows where the peg would go. tmp_5290-0803161712-1986900260.jpg tmp_5290-0803161711-1315051507.jpg

Pic of the saw from a few angles will help with the identification better.

I posted 2 more pictures of the saw for ID. I was more wondering if anyone has tried a new clutch cover on these. Btw, I love the saw! I picked it up cheap with shot A/V bushings, missing gaskets and a bar that didn't fit right etc. It runs great now.

I think you have the cover for later production 254 xp saws and it looks like you have a 154 to me , or a very early 254.

Thanks Simondo, you're probably right. It fits good other than the peg, so I'll probably just grind that off and use it.

that cover looks like the 455 im working on
I looked up the cover for a 455 and I see what you mean. That part by the peg looks very similar, but mine has the flag for the brake and everything.

Are you not missing the 2 lugs off the back ?

yes the new one doesn't have the lugs. How big a deal is that? Will the bar studs hold it in place good enough?

last production of the 154 pt no 501 87 41-02
1990 onwards 254 xp pt no 501 87 40-06
Side covers are very hard to get over here so hope you have better luck in the US...a parts saw is a good shout. I like having the lugs but you prob could get away with it.

That is just the new style replacement cover. I am pretty sure i had read a post some were on here about this. On the early 254's without the spot for the post you have to grind the post off to make it fit. I think i actually was one of spike60 posts

There is a service bulletin that explains the 2 side covers. There's some overlap because the change to the case occurred 2 years before the change over to the metal cover. I'll list all of the serial number changes for the different models. The problem with the fit up is the metal cover has a guide pin that has to fit into a recess on the case and only the new cases have it. I suppose it wouldn't be a big deal to just grind it off if need be. If you have a G model you have to use the cover plate for the wires or you'll get some arching to the metal cover. Plastic side covers are NLA; metal still available.

Case changes:

262- 1994, wk 14, 0342
257- 1994 wk 15, 0001
254-1994 wk 15, 0001

New brakes supplied:

254G-1996 wk 10, 0001
254-1996 wk 13, 0001
257-1996 wk 13, 0251
262- 1996 wk 9, 0401
262G-1996 wk 11, 0410
