It's been a while since I posted and I wanted to put some pictures up of the progress that has been made on the saw. Shaun finished the repairs an fabrication and it went to Pittsburgh, PA for powder coating by @Glock37. The saw returned to me and I put in a big order with the local Stihl dealer. While waiting for parts I was in an accident that resulted in 2nd and 3rd degree burns to my legs on May 21st. I sustained 20% burns and spent 17 days in the burn ICU and had skin grafts. All I can say is avoid getting burned.

I am now recovered so it is time to get back to building the saw. Last weekend I had the second round of parts come in so I got started.

I found that the hard oil line had a crack when I inspected it prior to installation. @NewToStihl was kind enough to trade me a perfect replacement. I got started on assembly.

I ran into a roadblock when I went to buy parts. My saw needs an impulse line bark for the oil pump. The dealer said the part is NLA. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement? I am looking for part #32 in the diagram below.

TIA for any info on the barb you can post. I'll post when parts come in.

Sorry to hear about your burn injury, Bob. The barb should be easy enough to find - maybe get the measurements off of it and probably something equivalent can be found.

I know some older motorcycles use similar pulse fittings.

The IPL looks pretty similar to the standard impulse barb from any later Stihl. Can you measure the ID of the hole it needs to be pressed into?

Yeah, burns suck. I’m glad to hear you’re doing better, though. If it’ll help anyone the p/n for the barb is 0000 988 5212

Im glad your healing up.
Fantastic build. Shaun does work some miracles, humbly.

Shaun is an artist with magnesium. I am amazed at the work he did on this saw. When I got it I had no hope that it would ever look like this. Thanks to Beau, Shaun and Mike it looks like new.

I ordered two yesterday, thanks for the number. If they don't fit my plan is to get some brass barbs out if the plumbing department at the hardware store that fit the hose and turn the smooth end to size in a lathe.

Nor Cal GTG was a blast as it always is. I'm waiting for parts to come in at the dealer.

I have some questions about this saw:

1. what is the best way to set the ignition timing. I don't have the crankshaft tool that the SM describes. I see two ways I could do it based on data in the service manual without this tool:
a. The SM says that points should break at 0.120" BTD. I could make a dial indicator holder out of an old spark plug and use my dial indicator to find TDC and 0.120" BTDC to set the timing.
b. The SM shows 27° to 29° spark advance. I could make a degree wheel that would go on the crankshaft on the clutch side along with a wire pointer. I can use this to set the points so they break at 27° to 29° BTDC

2. The IPL I have doesn't list a part number for the fiber seal for the plug in the bottom of the left case half. This is the plug that is removed for the crankshaft timing tool. Does anyone know a part number for this fiber ring?

Thanks in advance. I wouldn't be this far without the help of this board. I also appreciate your comments on this build.

I made some progress on the saw yesterday after our neighborhood winter road cleanup. Rain is hopefully coming this winter in California.

I got the starter put together and it functions as it should. I out it in the saw and it looks and works great.

I also rebuilt the carburetor ad installed it with new gaskets.

I ordered a degree wheel from Amazon and put it on the clutch side of the crankshaft. I made a pointervoutvof a peice of wire wrapped around a bolt. I put a piston stop in the spark plug hole and rotated the engine first clockwise and got the number that the stop

I turned it counter clockwise and got the number at the stop

The wheel was adjusted until i got the same number at both CW and CCW. I knew the pointer was at TDC when indicated using this method.

I set the points to break at 28 degrees which was the middle of the range per the service manual. I pulled the flywheel, made sure the wires were in their slots cast in the points plate, and installed the cover. I removed the degree wheel and torqued the nuts at either end of the crankshaft to the values listed in the SM.

I forgot to order a fuel tank cover gasket so I'm held up until it comes in. I'm not sure how I missed it but it is what it is.

I almost forgot to say I put the starter back on and with the plug out and connected to the wire I have spark. I'm really looking forward to starting this saw.

Thanks. I can't wait to start it too. It will be bittersweet because I'm really enjoying this project.

I ordered the fuel tank cover gasket on the way home from work today. Parts have taken about a week to come in.
