The McCullough pull handle when I got it.

I have a question.

I turned the engine over by hand using the starter cup. When I do that I hear compresed air leaking from the decomp valve. Is this normal for very, very low RPM? Will it seal at high RPM?

Excuse my ignorance. This is my first time working on one of these saws. The decomp isn't like anything I've seen before.

I get no leakage at low rpm pulling it over on an aftermarket one., could you cover be depressing it?

I went out in the garage and tried bending the arm a bit more. Same result. I can hear air escaping through the valve when I turn it over by hand.

Monday I'll order a new decomp valve and return this one as a defective unit.

The other option I thought about would be to lap the valve with grinding compound and a drill. Any thoughts on that?

I stopped in the Stihl dealer to get status on the 0arts I ordered because they seem to be taking a long time. It turns out they were delivered because they have a signed receiving slip. The problem is there isn't anyone who works there by the name of the person who signed for the parts and the parts are no where to be found. They said they are trying to figure out what happened.

SUCCESS!!!

After 3 decomp valves and 6 weeks I finally got one that doesn't leak! This one felt better right out of the envelope. The shaft is tight in the bore unlike the last two. I did a vacuum test on the saw after assembly and the needle holds. What a relief.

I did a thourough test. This picture was taken with low vacuum right after I got it together.

I didn't have a lot of time so I got the carb on and called it a day.

After lunch we left for an anniversary overnight in Monterey. I didn't get to the saw until Sunday afternoon. It feels good to get over this decompression valve hurdle.

I had a little time Sunday afternoon to work with the saw. I finished assembly and am very pleased with the results. I spent a lot of time adjusting the decomp valve spring to get it to not hold the valve open when the cover is installed.

I plan on putting fuel and oil in it to be sure none of the gaskets leak. This upcoming weekend I plan to start the saw.

I have a 84" bar that came with the saw that has a 1.2" full comp chain. I counted 165 DL. I would like to get a .404 chain for it. I calculated 204 DL. Is this correct or am I missing something?

Not sure on the conversion. I figured you meant 1/2 and not 1.2. Didn’t know if you had a new way of measuring chain.

Bad typo.

The bar came with 165DL of 1/2" chain

I calculated 204DL of 0.404 chain. Is that correct?
Well I dont know if this makes any sense but a 41" .404 bar would be 124 on my 090 so 2xs would be 248 DL ? @sawfun has some huge bars and might know?

He had spent enough to restore that beast..
Hmmm to be honest, I'm not a logger and I have more and better saws than most of them...
