Hello everyone,

This is my first post on here. I sure do follow alot of your guys threads on here. Especially the 044/440 hybrid topics. A little introduction. I live in southeastern Wisconsin.
I do work full time as a maintenance supervisor. On my spare time i build and repair stihl chainsaws. I own a ms440, a ms261c and a 290 converted 390. Had more but got rid of some. I do all my own maintenance and maintenance on over a dozen saws from a local tree service. I do cut firewood for camping and also help clean wooded private property. Dead ash is a huge thing here. On my bench now is a ms390 rebuild, a ms211c tune up, and a ms440/460 hybrid build.

Anyways, i came across two 056av supers for sale. 150$ for both. Ones together with clutch problems. Sounds like its locked up or engaging with the recoil. It does have the bosch ignition. The other saw is in parts in a box and looks mostly there. Id like to have it as a resto project. Ive heard that there monsters. And heard of the issues.
Is this a saw i should pursue getting? Or is it more a hassle because of parts scarcity?
I do have other projects! Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!! I have not worked on the 056, though I have worked on an 031AV and 075AV (same form factor), both of them had been converted to electronic ignition. Both of them were in rough shape and I ended up splitting the cases on both, replacing the bearings and cleaning and repairing until I got them back together again. While not difficult (not more difficult than current saws), they can be kind of a pain in that if you want to do anything underneath you pretty much need to pull off the handle to really get to anything...its a process. Both had leaky fuel tanks, but that is easily fixed with a gasket, the 075 took a special tool to get the clutch off. I have not had any issues getting the parts I needed (except one - noted later), you just have to watch for different variations of the saws. With the 031 there are two different versions of the rear handle and they do not interchange, their mounting is totally different. When working on the 075, I tried replacing the oil seals and one was the wrong size, all of the IPLs said that they were supposed to be the same size - come to find out, the case is from an 051 and was converted to handle the 075 cylinder and it has two different sized oil seals, ended up ordering the one I needed from Greece, got to me in two weeks and was cheaper than anything I could get on ebay or in the store. The 075 also has two different sized throttle rods and of course the one I was working on has the longer one that is no longer available, so I made a couple out of bicycle spokes and hardened them.

For project saws, I would think that the 056 Supers (87cc vs 81 cc for the standard) would be a good deal, especially if you have a fully intact one and parts to pull from off of another. $150 for both seems like a good deal to me, especially if when you get a good running saw, you could sell the extra parts back on eBay and recoop some money and free up space for other project saws!!

Welcome - I agree with @hacskaroly - For $150.00, you could take the two and make one runner pretty easily. The hard-to-get parts for the 056 are the PTO side main bearing (which came with the seal new), the seal for that bearing, and ignition parts. However, Stihl manufactured millions of these saws so there's a lot of parts on the used (secondary) market.
