042-048 rebuild.

We're all the 042's with a chainbrake supposed to have the dissconect style instead of a band like new saws? Just wondering how they work for when I go to redo the ones I have. Hoping to have at least 3 runners out of the 2 048 and 3 042 I have.

Two types that I'm aware of. Both band brakes. Not sure what you mean by "disconnect style". First pic is what you'll likely find on the 042's and the second one shows both the early and later styles..., either of which you may find on the 048's.

Yes I'll do that, thank you for the break downs. Watched a you tube video of the chainsaw guy and he had an 042 that when the break engaged you could still rev the engine. And he said on the video was a completely different style than we have today. Only thing I can think of is it had some kind of coupler behind the clutch that tripped with the lever. Haven't looked real close yet. I know one of the 042's runs but has bad bearing clutch side will run and idle till chain is on and you try and cut. Must load bearing up just enough to move crank and cause air leak

It took me about ten years to find the components to reinstall the working brake on the 042 I have . Then trying to figure out how it went together took a couple of hours .As I recall this praticular one is slightly different from the two 048's a have so trying to use them as a guide proved to be of little help .
Rebuilding them would prove to be a chore finding some of the parts .For example the clutch side bearing and seal are strictly OEM and they bring a premium if you can even find them .

So not easy to get parts. I'm sure the dealer I got the saws from had the parts but I was unable to get all that I wanted because of money. I'm sure the 2 people that bought it all probably resold on ebay

Rebuilt a full wrap 048. Crankcase screws had loosened up causing an air leak.

Took forever to find the misc. bits.

I was lucky to break even on the money pit.

It did run and cut good in the end.

Never again!

I'm keeping whatever I can make of the 5 complete saws I have. If it's one or two that's fine hopefully one 042 and one 048. I like them for some reason they are a tank but run well. My uncle has a 042

FWIW: I have a PTO side crank seal squirreled away around here somewhere.[emoji848]

Yeah looks a little pricey for some parts but I do want to fix some just for my collection. Looks like the one side seal is same as an 041 but that's on eBay and description isn't always right. And the other side is on there for 24$ if it's the correct one. But I don't have a complete service break down for part numbers.

Have lots of other saws to run and after they're done might only see couple tanks a year maybe little more. I have 041's regular av and one super. Few parts short of a 2nd 064 and 2 075's with ts510 and 760 parts saws. An 090 that I mill with along with the 075 that's running. From what I read loggers didn't like them because of the weight to power ratio on the 042's and 048's but with the bigger cylinder the 048 was better

I like the top cover/air filter contour design on the 028, 038, 042, 048 family. Then there is the torque factor for each one in its own right except maybe the 042. I have real nice good running examples of the 028 Super and 038 Mag along with two 042's and one and a half 048's I hope to get one runner each out of..., without breaking the bank. Built like tanks as you're well aware. LOL

They say the weak link on the 042 and 048 was the use of slotted screws which one of mine had .I replaced them with torx heads .Some say they are heavy but I guess that's just what you get used to .It's also been said when the 048 came out they were the highest HP to weight ratio of any saw built in that time period .Neither was made for a long period of time .
One of my 048's,the first one I bought needs rings which are no problem,038 Mag fits .It had a spun main bearing which I repaired the pocket and never had a problem with it .The other needs a clutch side seal of which I have one new one left but it's back burner job .I've ran 32" bars on them and they did pretty well for stock saws .
Now on those bearings and seals you might get lucky and find them in some dealers parts inventory because I doubt there's much of a call for them and likely hasn't been for sometime

Yeah I'm sure the dealer that went out of business and had the auction would have had. He had all kinds of new parts but my pockets weren't deep enough. No other local dealers for stihl saws I'm sure they got separated and sold on ebay. If it would have been at an earlier time I would have just wrote a check and bought it all but to much going at the time. Bet I could have bought all he had for 5000 because the owner and I got to be great friends over the years.
