Partially screwing the nut down prevents the threads from getting boogers up. As with anything a little common sense goes along ways. -

I've had one for about 5 years and don't anticipate ever having to replace it or do a major repair.

That begs the question .... As cheap as they were, and sold everywhere, why not just buy new parts?
