    Mikes chainvises

I'm looking forward to when the next batch is available. I've procrastinated on getting one of these for far too long.

    RIP Saw 500i

Yes, indeed, after wasting time/footage telling you what they had for lunch and what their dog did yesterday. There are some good/helpful videos out there, as you say. The only two that I consistently watch occasionally for "entertainment" are "Wilson Forest Lands" and "Davey's Logging". Two...

    RIP Saw 500i

I don't think it's retardation, or maybe it is and I have it too. I do find some videos useful, if I'm looking for specific information, but would really prefer to read a written document. That way I can easily skip over non-pertinent information. But I really have little patience for most...

    Chain Technical Information

I think the long strings you get when "noodling" with the grain tells you that an individual tooth does not chatter in and out of the wood with each pass, as in the middle diagram. I believe that, when bucking, the chip length is determined to some extent by the chips breaking at the growth...

Yep, that's the one! Thanks. The version I have saved doesn't include the front "cover" either - I was always curious why. But of course it doesn't affect the content.

As a newer member, would you care to expand on this, please?

    Grinder Comparison Thread

That's interesting; it seems to me that my CBN wheel produces less heat than the pink Oregon-type wheel. What material are the Franzen wheels made of? I'm always curious to see if there's a better mouse trap out there somewhere... ;)

    Chain Technical Information

I'm a reader anyway, and I really appreciate reference material on subjects I'm interested in. I have a Carlton chain manual in PDF form I came across some years ago, and the recurring theme throughout the whole manual was "if your saw's not cutting right, 90% of the time it's because it's not...

I’d not seen the Pferd manual before. Good resources, thank you!

Jimssawsnstuff is NOT the same person as banned scammer jmssaws.

To clarify, I wasn’t trying to give you a hard time. I just thought the almost-incoherent rants from the other guy were comical, in a sad way. ;)

I wasn't around then, but I take it that you pissed him off? ;):meparto: I'm not sure I understand what he wrote but I get the gist. :D

    Grinder Comparison Thread

Thank you for confirming that! Very interesting machine, even if way beyond my needs, but like many here I just like to see how things work and what ideas folks come up with. Yes, I guess he must be. Thanks for the feedback.

    Grinder Comparison Thread

Thanks for posting that. Watching the machine was interesting, although I'm not impressed by the prolonged grinding time on each tooth. Makes the sparks fly and is a good eye-catcher for a demo, maybe, but wouldn't want it done that way on my chains. I only watched bits and pieces as it was...

    The dogs of OPEforum

Thanks. It's a good solid old-school stove. It will take up to a 30" stick of wood and will hold fire (down to coals, anyway) for 36 hours if I set it up right. My dad worked in a machine shop, and in 1977 he asked the shop owner if he could build a stove. The owner said yes, if he would build...

Not so pros 4 new and without politics or drama

What the heck? Did he ever explain what he was doing there to begin with? I suspect his plate may be right... As someone with a long driveway out in the country, unknown vehicles showing up unexpectedly are always cause for suspicion. Showing up in that kind of weather raises even more questions.
